Chinatown Meat Market Denies Selling Dog Meat (After Admitting It)

[UPDATE BELOW] A CBS affiliate in Minneapolis investigating the owner of an illegal puppy farm reports that at least 170 dogs were sold to a Chinatown meat market, which in turn sold them as food. Dak Cheong Meat Market on 36 East Broadway shares the same address as the Canine Culture Center, CBS reports, and it seems the "culture" there is entirely culinary. Amazingly, a CBS reporter called up Dak Cheong and asked an employee if they sell dog meat. He said yes:

“Do you sell dogs?” asked reporter James Schugel.

“Yea. We sell dog,” said the man who answered the phone.

“Dogs for people to eat?” asked Schugel.

“Uh, yea,” he said. “We sell many kinds of meat.”

“Dogs for people to eat?” asked Schugel.

“Yes,” said the man.

Schugel questioned the man again, just to be clear. He said he does not sell dogs for pets. He only sells them for food.

But we called up the number listed for Dak Cheong this morning, and spoke with employee Mio Ciu. Here's a transcript of our conversation:

Hi, good morning, do you speak English? Uh...no.

But you understood what I said? Yeah.

Do you sell dog meat? No.

Is there someone there who can speak to me? No, this is America, we don't sell dog meat!

Is this Dak Cheong Meat Market? Yeah.

Okay, I saw— No, this is not Dak Cheong Meat Market, this is DC Meat Market.

DC? But that's the same initials as Dak Cheong. No, that is wrong. You have the wrong number.

Where's Dak Cheong? How can I know? That's the owner before, you know.

I see. When did you take over? About ten years ago. No... Last year.

Do you know anywhere you can buy dog meat in Chinatown? No...These past two days many people have called and complained and asked, "Why this store sell dog meat?" Many women and men. I don't know what happened. They called the police, they called the Department of Agriculture, I don't know what happened. Everybody came! They say I sell dog meat. That's crazy! This is America! This is a civilized country! Who sells dog meat? This isn't China!

So did you get in any trouble? No! Because we don't sell dog! How could I get in trouble?

Do you think the old company sold dog meat? No, I don't think so! This is America. Maybe some people hate us. Or they're racist. Or they owe me money. Some customer owes me $10,000. They don't pay me. That's why everybody call the past few days. Makes me crazy.

Ciu then hung up the phone before we could ask him whether he has any cat meat in stock. The state Department of Agriculture has not immediately responded to a request for comment, but we'll update if we hear back. In the meantime, if you want to read a distressing story about the woman accused of running the largest puppy mill in Minnesota, step right this way.

UPDATE: "We did send inspectors there yesterday," Michael Moran, a spokesman for the State Department of Agriculture, tells us. "We found no evidence of dog meat. We're not sure why the person said yes to the reporter; we think there might be a language barrier there. We inspected last December in response to another report of dog meat, and also found nothing. And animal inspectors have gone there but found no evidence of dog. So far there's no evidence that the meat market sold dog meat or ever received dogs."

They admitted to selling "DUCK meat" as the idiot Minnesota "journalists" later corrected. Wait, you didn't hear about the retraction? You mean people just want to believe the story whether it's true or not? Shocker.
    http://blog.angryasianman.com/...

This is just like the Jewish comic, Ari Shaffir's Amazing Racist" prank, where he harassed an Asian restaurant trying to sell them a dog.

Gothamist is just an ignorant enough blog to keep the wrong story up
  • IT MAKES NO FINANCIAL SENSE TO SELL DOG MEAT IN THE USA (NO ONE EATS IT), DON'T YOU PEOPLE GET IT?!
  • i dislike when arrogant western values are held to other cultures like they are superior. Just because one culture eats see dogs as a nutritional value doesn't mean anything. Indians do eat cows because they are worshiped you don't see Indians criticizing Western ideology of eating a cow. Ecuadorians eat guinea pigs. While I may not eat it, I certainly don't judge them.
  • Peanut_Butter
It's a well-known market.  I never had any problems with any of their meats.  So, I really don't care.  But they would thank the reporter for the free advertising!
  • You would think that after finding out the truth the Gothamist would at least take down this article which is could be a liability since the business owner might could sue for libel. Though Suing isn't the Asian way.

This article pretty much does the jury, judge executioner...the owner is guilty after admitting...come on tell us the truth...we know Asians love eating dogs.

Let me tell yall why there is no dogs being sold at any of the profitable Asian meat markets any in the States.

Why risk losing your business license selling "illegal" dog meat that won't generate much revenue from a small minority of people who would be interested in procuring dog meat.
Think like an Asian. Its all business baby.
Now if this was a shady fly by night type of meat business. I still don't see how selling dog  meat can be profitable....think like an Asian. Profit oriented, puns intended.
  • Agreed

So not one chinese speaker chimed in here?  WTF

Chinese people who dont speak english natively pronounce Duck as "Dock" or "Dawk."   See Martin Yan for example

When the reporter called him in this is how the conversation went:

Do you sell dogs?” asked reporter James Schugel.“Yea. We sell dawk,”

Reporter would have known if he ever interacted with ethnic people
  • whoa, that brings up a memory - my father once called the town to complain about dog droppings on our front yard. he was asked if he lived next to a pond...
  • GregJG
The Almighty Father has forbidden us from eating many things but people still do.
  • redline5
Sure the guys wasn't thinking of hot dogs?? lots of butcher shops make their own suasages
  • Kathy Bauck, one of the largest dog brokers in the country, was convicted on animal cruelty in May 2009 with evidence provided by CAPS from an undercover employment investigation. USDA used this conviction to terminate her license (only good for 2 years but unlikely USDA would have allowed her to obtain another license). Bauck, however, continued to sell to pet shops on Long Island and the Canine Culture Center in New York City, which we discovered is a meat market. Based on investigatory and documentary evidence provided by CAPS and Animal Folks Minnesota, in September, USDA permanently revoked Bauck's license and ordered her to dispose of her dogs. Seewww.caps-web.org and www.animalfolksmn.org for more information.

It still isn’t clear if Bauck was selling dogs for meat consumption. I spoke to the manager of the store when we went undercover. No one there speaks English well. It is unlikely that even if they do sell meat, they would admit this to a non-Chinese person by phone. These types of transactions are done in Chinese and in person. It is probable that they misunderstood the reporter. Also, it does not make financial sense. Bauck is selling each puppy for several hundred dollars. And with shipments of at least a half dozen puppies each month to Canine Culture Center, a meat market isn’t going to make much money. We still believe that one of Bauck’s co-conspirators (one of the pet shops) came up with this address as a front.

USDA was unable to confirm that Bauck sold the dogs for meat. New York Ag & Markets also conducted an investigation based on our complaints and also claims she was not selling them for meat. We are currently working on an investigation with the New York Attorney General regarding the pet shops who bought from her.

Nonetheless, we have reported the meat market to Board of Public Health in NYC and they will investigate.

The focus on this story, which was hastily put together at the end despite a long lead time, was supposed to be on the USDA Consent Decision, whereby Bauck is permanently revoked from having a federal license to breed or broker dogs. CAPS and Animal Folks Minnesota provided all of the documentary and investigatory evidence to USDA.

  • Gothamist -  Your title is misleading - After reading the entire article, there is an [UPDATE] that a government officials were there and that no dog meat was found... but why wasn't the title amended and why wasn't an [UPDATE] being posted with the title?  I mean your "coverage" on OWS, bicycle accidents, puppies getting thrown out of apartments gets lots of [UPDATES]- even for the most miniscule things - but since this is about Asians, let people assume that they are selling dogs even when it is inspected to be not the case.

I think this article is intentionally posted to fuel racism towards asians

You never got the memo? Gothamist writers would sell their mothers' souls for more hits....
  • Eggcream
I don't know if that is the intention of the publisher but the title certainly invites racists to add idiotic comments, as some have.
  • ganghiscon
Yes, Jen Chung and her staff are conspiring to fuel racism towards Asians.

it's times likes these where i wish jenchungsbra was still around
  • If you were going to be really smart about it you could've gone down and bought some of this mystery meat and had it tested or something.
  • theevilerone
Do they sell cat meat? Tasty.
  • RobertMosesSupposesErroneously
Cat meat is nasty. The one time I tried it, it was super stringy and greasy. Maybe it was the preparation, but I dunno - not a fan.
  • candyazzbb
because they're carnivores theyre not meant to be eaten.
  • Q: I see. When did you take over?

A: About ten years ago. No... Last year.

I smell a new SNL character here, an Asian 'Liar Guy' perhaps?

Humans are omnivores.  Live with it.
  • chee1rs
try visiting a few countries in Asia and see what they sell / eat
  • CommentA1
Why do humans get to decide what animal gets to live?

Doggies get to live but cows and pigs get slaughtered.

Im against dog eating but those who feel so strongly about this should stop eating meat altogether.
  • hotstepper
    welcome to the food chain!
  • AaronRed99
Well if they are selling to their own people, who cares.
  • We had a delicious Golden Retriever steak last night.  Bon apetit!
  • nycpwt
I know it's totally not classy but I had to add some A1. Thing was dry as a bone.
  • LtWorf
If people want to sell and eat dog meat, go ahead. We eat everything else, so why stop at dog?
  • RobertMosesSupposesErroneously
Do I for once agree with LtWorf on something? Animals are animals, meat is meat. To say chicken and pig are tasty and fine, but dog meat is disgusting murder makes no sense!

And don't try to claim an intelligence difference. Pigs are proven as smart and self-aware as dogs, and smarter than cats.
  • quietstorms
Why not eat humans? They're animals as well. Like you said 'Don't try to claim intelligent difference.'
  • People are animals too.
  • bawlsdeep
Twinkle fingers down. Dogs are the 99%.
  • edgie168
Yeah, but dogs don't produce bacon like pigs can.
  • RobertMosesSupposesErroneously
I wonder..if we bred and raised dogs to be as obese and fatty as we do farm pigs, they might have cuts very similar to bacon!
  • edgie168
    "similar" doesn't mean "same". :D
  • RobertMosesSupposesErroneously
It's true...pigs have a monopoly on bacon, chicken have a monopoly on buffalo wings, cows have a monopoly on filet mignon. Each animal is beautiful and delicious in their own special way :) Nature is great!
  • PhotoR
MMMMM.... you made me think about rabbit stew and duck confit...
  • quietstorms
Disqus really needs a downvote button...
  • LtWorf
We eat animals, even ones other cultures would consider sacred. Its taboo for us to eat Dog because we consider them to be 'our best friends', while other cultures see them as they do all other animals. I personally won't eat Dog because of those same traits I identify with. But I won't stop other people from doing so.

If I ate Panda, Jen would kill me. But then again, Panda's are rare, so we should only chill with eating them since there aren't many around. (Even though they could be delicious).
  • candyazzbb
i dont eat carnivores and no one should.
  • openheads
    Ehhhhhh.............. Shut up.
  • quietstorms
Sorry, but I just don't give a rat's ass about what other cultures do. Just because they do it doesn't make it right.

On Sunday, I read a story of a dog sacrificing his own life to save his owner from a fire. To me, they are more than worthy enough to be given respect. Especially when many humans wouldn't do the same for a family member.
  • candyazzbb
i agree.. sars disease started in i think china because of caged mir cats they were eating.
  • Timon_8
And rabbits!  Rabbit stew is so very delicious.

  • Sinchy
That's what 850 million Hindus say about us eating cows.
  • quietstorms
That's fine, but do let me know when you read stories of a cow saving a human's life, work with the police force or warn their owner that they may have cancer.
  • Gepap
Doesn't make it wrong either. After all, do stories of fatal maulings make eating dog right? of course not.

    Food choices are cultural.
  • masterjarvis
    you sound a lil crazy
  • jibbly
You know I'm curious about Panda.  I would not eat Panda meat for environmental/preservationist reasons, but it's interesting to think about because they're herbivores yet they're part of the carnivorous family.
  • Actually, pandas are omnivores. It's just that they're kinda lazy and obtaining meat is hard.
  • jibbly
Right, seems like they eat meat if the opportunity arises, but they're mostly reliant on bamboo.  I guess my question still stands since a typical panda diet is mostly vegetation not animal flesh.
  • LtWorf
I heard the very first Panda was about to bite into a delicious tiger before some annoying Vegan gave it a Pamphlet that says 'why eating animals is wrong'.
  • jibbly
    What a "Grade A" moron.

Also, that second conversation just cracked me up.
  • gothamist_tips
    Fixed, thanks.
  • Mike_Nesmith
Y u no like eat dog meat!?!?
  • RobertMosesSupposesErroneously
I had dog meat in Guangzhou - It was actually really delicious! Had this sort of caramelized sweet-and-sour preparation going on. Pretty close to pork in taste/texture. The plate even had a dog pattern on it!

The host was super excited that Americans were willing to try dog. He told us the best dishes use puppies because adult dogs are tough and stringy.
  • PhotoR
Yup! Me too! Kind of like a mix between pork and goat.
