A hit-and-run driver struck two boys riding their bikes last night in Gravesend. Details are still scant, but the NYPD press office confirms that police and EMTs were called to the intersection of Avenue S and East 4th Street last night around 10:30 p.m. There they found two injured 12-year-old boys who had been hit by a car while riding their bikes.

The NYPD tells us one of the boys had severe road rash lacerations to his left arm, while the other had severe head trauma. Both were rushed to Lutheran Hospital, where they are now listed in stable condition, according to an NYPD spokesman. But ABC 7's sources say that the boy with head trauma is in critical condition with a cerebral hemorrhage. The news channel also reports that the driver was drag racing, and that the boys were on the same bike, with one of them riding on the pegs.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the boys fled the scene, and has not been found, nor could the NYPD press office provide any description of the vehicle. (A preliminary wire report said it was a black BMW.) The NYPD says an "investigation is ongoing"... which essentially means that once they find the driver, he can simply explain that he didn't see the cyclists and case closed!

  • it docent matter if it was dark and he didn't see them it was a hit and RUN

  • You know who live in that high income area,
and you also know they drive like they own the road,
since the city always gives them whatever they demand..
    shalom.

  • There's no excuse for a hit and run in a small sedan when the driver can clearly tell he's hit someone. There's also no excuse for using a tragedy like this to further your own bike lane/ car-hating agenda.

This makes me so angry. I know exactly where it is, and I used to bike around this area. Cars don't even bother to stop, they just speed up and honk. You live in a neighborhood full of families. If you can't wait 15 seconds for the kids to get out of the way, get out of the neighborhood. In fact, get out of NYC and move to middle-america where you can be an obese, lazy **** who drives to the end of the driveway to get the mail. I'm so disgusted. There needs to be a strong "Occupy NYC Streets" pronto.

If only we required all drivers to be licensed and display some sort of identifying plate on the outside of their cars, then all of these scofflaw, rogue drivers would go away.

    Right, Eric Ulrich?

Some child playing with his toy race car hit two young men. So sad.

Investigate. Prosecute. Traffic cameras. These guys could have been in class this morning.

    or tossing shopping carts?

  • swampyankeesmom

sorry, that was in bad taste

  • CurmudgeonNYC

True- but they could have also been at home at 10:30pm on a school night.

Yeah, what kind of parents let their 12-year old kids out at 10:30 pm on a school night?

  • cetriche

That's completely irrelevant. Drivers in this part of Brooklyn have no regard for cyclists. It could have been two adults safely coming home from work.

  • swampyankeesmom

too bad they were on bikes, they will not prosecute the driver when they find him/her. the driver probably "didn't know i hit anyone". so sad & i hope they recover soon.

  • Cyclerock

I hope the boys make a full recovery and that the driver is found, charged, and jailed.
