Photos: Occupy Wall Street Protesters Become Heroes And Villains For Halloween

The Occupy Halloween parade ("because the 1% shouldn't get all the candy") went down on Wall Street earlier this morning, and our photographer Katie Sokoler was on the scene. She tells us there were about 22 protesters dressed up as both heroes and villains, with a fake Fox News team on hand as well. The event was essentially a photo op for press (they even had a storyboard), with "more cameras than heroes! They only walked a few blocks and stopped to pose at different buildings." Click through for photos of the working class superheroes, who will also be marching in the big Village Halloween Parade later this evening. Here's a list of characters:

  • @5w30:disqus wow. so you spend all..my co-worker's half-sister makes $77/hr on the laptop. She has been without work for 5 months but last month her paycheck was $8885 just working on the laptop for a few hours. Read about it on this site http://ufil.ms/efLNV

Hate to interrupt all the fascinating speculation, but some facts might be helpful...

The participants in the project include NY Times bestselling authors,
folks who work in national-non profits, school teachers, university
professors, as well as working parents. They are everyday heroes. Like you. Like me.

Most of the people you see in the photos have at least one full time
job (some two) which is why the action had to be so early in the morning.
They all had to jump straight from being superheroes fighting corporate crime, to their day jobs.  Much like Clark Kent.

Up until new, this project has been entirely self-funded by the participants you see in the photos - with the additional of about 500+ collective hours of donated labor to create things like costumes & giant robots. In one week. This was only possible with the generous access to workspaces made available to them throughout the city, as well as moving trucks whose time was donated for free (Have you ever tried to move a giant evil Stock Exchange robot in NY? Not easy).

And of course, it also included many real superheroes,  the ones putting their security and health on the line in order to fight for our Democracy: the occupiers of Liberty Park.

Which raises the real question this thread should be answering: what have *you* done to fight for justice recently?

Now back to your regular scheduled programming. Carry on.

Rather than discuss the issues raised by citizens who care enough to creatively protest, we have a peanut gallery (sock puppets?) who would rather make false, ad hominem attacks. Sad. Yet, I haven't heard a single reasonable response from various critics against the OWS protesters, in response to the ISSUES RAISED. Just more of the same static.
  • Just more proof that the OWS are mostly out of work actors making some side money. They posted it in the jobs section on Craiglist, no surprise there.

    they are losers
  • occupy halloween
Yes, working people who wake up extra early to organize  a statement to the media about saving our democracy, and then go to work a full day, are losers. Hardworking Americans thank you for your opinion of them. Please be sure to share it often, and make sure you include your name.

The really fucked up thing about this is that if the Don himself came out of that building and offered them a job, I doubt very seriously that any of them would take it.
  • Because believing that your values should align with your profession is a... bad thing?

    Yes. How completely bizarre.
  • Guest
Funny how you take what I said and turn it into something political just for the sake of your own argument.  Are you trying to say that a secretary or property manager doesn't align with these people's values?  Or are you just talking out of your stagnant bowels, as usual?

  • 1) It's not that funny.
    2) don't*
    3) No, I'm not saying that. I'm saying that when dealing with a movement who, in large measure, is demanding more ethical accountability from a system from which they feel disenfranchised, it does not seem at all unusual that they would turn down employment from a company that they see as part of the problem.
  • Guest
    1) Que?
    2) I know you're not correcting my infallible grammar.
    3) It's not unusual, I agree, but I doubt very seriously that these people have such strong principles.

Hey, there are some commenters here who are affiliated with OWS, right?

Can you please tell the guy with the trumpet to go fuck himself?  It's too bad that the economy sucks and you guys don't have jobs, it really is, but that racket is keeping many of those of us who do from being able to concentrate on ours.
  • angry_pickle
Find a new job located elsewhere then.
  • theevilerone
Yes, a good taxpaying citizen of NYC should be driven out by you. I'd call you a mouth-breather, but I think you lack the effort.
  • JoshNY
    Heh.

Look, it'd be one thing if it served any actual purpose or advanced the discourse about the economy in any way, but it doesn't, it's just some dude making a racket.

I remember the day the Occupy protest movement started cyberbitchslap2.blogspot.com

3-30-11, Frank from ABQ call, aired on Randi Rhodes radio show (Nicole Sandler -guest host) .

    “I
always hear about the enemies of freedom abroad… what about the FIGHT
against enemies of freedom here at home. I don’t know about you people
but past experiences in my role as a political activist, community
organizer and blue collar worker, it felt like a battle to me.
    Funny thing... No
Muslim ever called me a Liberal wacko like Rush Limbaugh. No foreign
Dictator threatens my belief system on a daily basis like FOX News. No
Communist ever tried to turn me into a low wage slave like the Koch Bros
and the Republican Party Millionaires. I’ve been saying for years a
few fanatical terrorists who perverted Islam don’t scare me near as
much as those FOOLS who believe Capitalism can survive without ETHICS,
    RESPONSIBILITY and ACCOUNTABILITY!"

And for a moment there I wansn't taking this movement seriously enough...
  • oh, for a photo-op, i see....
  • You fucktards need to get out of your mommies basements and get a clue...REALLY!!!
  • Yeah, I must live in my mom's basement. Where did you get this idea?
  • wow. so you spend all your money on this shit?
  • It's upsetting when people have fun without you, I know, but calm down, Scrooge.
  • Guest
Scrooge is a Christmas thing.  Think up something original and actually funny.
  • "Scrooge" is in the dictionary as "a miserly person." It is not "a Christmas thing." So sorry about your fail. Did it hurt?
  • how am I a miserly or miserable person for pointing out the utter hypocrisy of a group of protestors who are protesting the fact that they don't have any money because of this country's outlandish spending and trading of common funds, but are spending what money they do have (or were given as donations for food and shelter) on elaborate super-hero costumes? For a group that wants to be taken seriously, this is not the sort of behavior to garner a serious response.
  • NurseRachet
It's unlikely the donations were used for this.  If you've ever been down there and maybe attended a general assembly you'd know that the funds must be voted upon and passed with consensus before they're allocated for any reason.  Having actually been there I'd say it's doubtful that the GA would approve using donations for this.

So what I'm saying is you are wrong.  This is almost definitely out of pocket money spent on this by the participants.

But why would you care anyhow?
  • Yeah, you're right, I wouldn't care. The fact that I'm pointing out that they make the movement look like a bunch of attention grabbing goofballs instead of a serious group that can incite change means I don't give a shit about the movement. I'm merely suggesting, if they want to put forth a positive and relevant message, they shouldn't do stupid shit like this that while sure it must have been fun for them getting their photos taken and making a big scene storming a Duane Reade, doesn't really seem relevant to what they are trying to accomplish.
  • For starters, they aren't protesting the fact that they don't have any money. They've never nailed down exactly what they want, but Planet Money came closest in their report, saying that they want a redesign of the system to give more of a voice to the masses. You're focusing on one catalyst of the movement and screaming "Hypocrites!", and it's coming off as rational at screeching at a vegetarian when you see them wearing leather. For fuck's sake, they're allowed to have fun. Calm down.
  • Screaming "Hypocrites!" at a vegan is just as rational as screaming "Murderers!" at a guy eating a McRib sandwich.
  • i need to calm down? You're the one jumping on a message board and insulting me for pointing out that it, yes it is, is hypocritical to spend money and effort of a movement such as this, which is already under a lot of scrutiny, on elaborate costumes which were created for (and I quote the article here) a "photo-op". These people are just as desperate for recognition as high-schoolers who post slutty pictures on Facebook.

    Screaming? Really, am I screaming?

And how is not rational to find the hypocritical behavior in the act of a vegan wearing leather?
  • Vegan?
  • hilarious résponse mikey pants. When confronted with a clear headed, reasonable response, make another lame joke.
  • Wasn't a joke. I never said anything about vegans.
  • Guest
Yeah it is defined as a miserly person, and so you're still completely wrong.  Miserly means stingy with money.  That has nothing to do with what you were TRYING and FAILING to say.  So sorry about your tiny pea brain.  Does it sound like a maraca when you shake your head?

    ________________________________
  • I really wish you would check the dictionary before you correct me.
"Miser: a mean, grasping person." Especially when dealing with money, but no, not exclusively.
  • Guest
I really wish you would check reality before saying anything.  You can continue to defend your poor choice of words.  That's your right.  But you're still wrong.

The dictionary does not disagree.  In fact, it respectfully agrees with me that you are a douchenozzle that refuses to admit he is wrong.  But I'll act as liaison between you and dictionary to give you a few words you could have used instead:  Buzzkill, killjoy, or party-pooper.  Now, get up and remove yourself from your parents' house.  It's a nice day outside.  Go check it out.
