Video: Occupy Wall Street Will Soon Survive On Pedal Power

Two communists power a generator hooked up to a bike in Zuccotti Park (screenshot)

Yesterday, the FDNY and NYPD raided Zuccotti Park and confiscated Occupy Wall Street's "generators and fuel from Zuccotti that posed a fire safety threat." Even the biofuels, man! But cycling advocacy group Times Up! energy-mapped the whole park and determined it would take 11 pedal-powering generators to fuel the movement, at the total cost of around $8,000.

Apparently, five of those special bikes are being assembled right now, in addition to the one that already existed in the park. We're still trying to determine whether or not the generator-bikes were donated or paid for by the movement's coffers, but that means only five more to go. Now the protesters just need a giant retractable dome that keeps the wind and rain out.

I think this is a great opportunity for Michael Moore to show his support for real.  He could bedal for 6 weeks without being fed.
  • Michael Moore has been down there already.

According to Privately Owned Public Spaces rule 37-743, "Electrical power shall be supplied by one or more outlets furnishing a total of at least 1,200 watts of power for every 4,000 square feet, or fraction thereof, of the area of a public plaza." Is the developer in violation of this rule? If no, why not just use the provided outlets?

When will the Emperor of New York stop treating the public like they are suckers or they were born yesterday and he makes it so obvious on top of it! The effort of the NYFD and NYPD is to beat down the OWS movement through freezing them out! Safety is a PR spin which he hopes the public will believe and the protesters will go home! The Emperor is living in the fog of make believe! It was an illegal seizure of generators that run on biofuels and doesn't pose a safety threat to the public! Bloomberg is hell bent on taking down the OWS movement! He's part of the 1% and with his corrupt friends are starting to get nervous that the protests are gaining traction in the poles. His logic is twisted and to say the least criminal! Now those protesters understand that Bloomberg

what happened to the Greenpeace truck outfitted with solar panels?
  • Yo, Occupiers: Here is your first sustainable econo2.0 business: build the bikes. And sell them. Right there from ZucciniPark.

I assume somebody has thought of this. Get to it. I need one for my Zune!
  • IT_guy
Bio-diesel is not the same as ethanol, which is what was discussed in that article you linked to.
Different products, different processes, though both are biofuels.
Ethanol isn't so great, bio-diesel is better.
    Just a clarification.
  • Christopher_Robbins
That is true! I will strike the remark.
  • How you like the first little chill OWS?  Think maybe it's time to pack up and rethink your strategy? Loving the weather from my nice warm heated apartment with running warm water and working toilets!!  Money in my pocket means I'll be having a great weekend of football, food, and friends.  Enjoy your whining ways while you try to avoid illness, frostbite, flu and death!  Bike Generators.  Laughing my fucking ass off at you all.....!!!!!!
  • ignatiusnyc
how do write such horrible things about u.s. marines and army vets of all ages and all wars who fought for what they beleived was "your" freedom?  securing your "financial" freedom,: do other sensible human beings actually befriend a invidual such as yourself? are you not ashamed to post "football, food, and friends" as your value system?
  • Nope, I'm proud to have money, a job, and friends.  I'm not a beggar like you BUMS on OWS.  My value system dictates that I shit on and eradicate all human scum, known as bums, freeloaders, communists, socialists and all OWS supporters.  Kill yourselves already.  You'll be happier than freezing to death or starving to death.
  • Interesting philosophy, Michael.  Since you advocate shitting on all "human scum",  take Joseph's suggestion and go down to OWS, where I'm sure they would love to shit on and eradicating YOU.   Just bums and freeloaders, communists and socialists?  Why stop there?  How about gays, women, people of color, immigrants, transgender, Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs....oh, I forgot hipster transplants......that should keep you busy for a while.
  • nvk
A kind reminder that your value system is about 600 years too old.

*My* value system dictates that I point out that anyone who does not realize that individualism and libertarian ideals do not scale to contemporary society is a fucking idiot.

Everyone forgets what the world looked like when Adam Smith wrote The Wealth of Nations --- hint, it was the late 1700s, the "goods" you could consume were quite limited, and high science at the time involved Euler's theories in math (which are no doubt important now, but they had few applications back then.)
  • Joseph Davidian
I have a suggestion why don't you go down there and tell them in their face, let them see you. Use the peoples mic. Since you seem to have a value system that espouses eradicating human scum show some courage go down there. Show them how you do it.
  • The depth of your psychopathy is piteous.
  • StarryGordon
    Don't feed the trolls.
  • Yes.I want to see YOU laugh when you lose YOUR job and are in danger of losing YOUR nice warm apt, flat-screen TV, and the friends you USED to watch football with, who will abandon you. LOL
  • How's the cold tonight Fern Cohen?  Has your nose fallen off yet from Frostbite in an attept to spite your face?  The sad thing is, I've TRIED to get fired.  I can't do it!  They won't do it!  Some of us are just TOO valuable to let walk away.

Fern Cohen, if you want some money, I'll be happy to shoot loose change at you wiht my newly purchased coin shooter.  Or maybe I'll just craxy glue a bunch of 20s in the middle of Broadway, so you fools can get run over trying to pick it up....

    Move along people---move along...

she's stalking anyone who has a job and doesn't agree with her
  • Excuse me......I taught in the inner-city for 7 years and then got ALS.  Now I am disabled in a wheelchair....did u not read above what I posted.  I am neither a nitwit, nor do I stalk anyone.  I wouldn't wish my disease or any lapse of health on anyone, but you deserve a big misfortune to wake you up from being the despicable animal that you are for posting the above.  I am not outside, but warm in my co-op which I bought 27 years ago with my own money.  Until my disability, I was only unemployed 3 days of 30 years of working, and that was because my company went under.  Hardly a nitwit.
  • remyngtin
good thing you're not stalking me
  • I happen to be severely disabled with ALS/Lou Gehrig's Disease -- paraplegic and wheelchair-bound.  I was a high school teacher in the inner-city before 2004, when this disease stole my health.  I would do anything to teach again, but I taught foreign language and I can't talk anymore. I had a job -- with tenure.  Before that, I had  a 20-year career as a sales executive.  I have 2 bachelors and a masters.  I had my life all set, with a lot of money put away for a comfortable retirement.  The money is all spent now.  But all in all, I feel lucky to have survived all these years, and have watched friends die of cancer.  I am an example that none of us can take our lives for granted.  I  am ale to enjoy a better quality of life than a lot of disabled people because I haven't been unemployed in 27 years of working -- except for a month when my company went out of business; however I had enough unused sick days to support myself for 3 months, so I never had to collect unemployment.  I worked hard for everything I had.  But it doesn't mean I can't feel for young people coming out of college who can't find a job.  And you could have everything you need, and still lose it.  Never take your life for granted.  And if you doubt what I am saying, check out my blog at http://fernals.blogspot.com.  But I'm sure you don't have time for that, and I'm sure u will find something mean and inhumane to say in response to me.  It's okay -- enjoy what you have and I wish you well, and hope u know how lucky you are. I am not cold tonight and I don't need your money.  I've paid into social security for many years, and I'm lucky to be able to collect disability.  But I feel for the young people who may not have that option in future.

just because one doesn't support Occupy Wall Street doesn't mean that they too aren't frustrated/worried/etc...

Is it just me, or do all the cocks that post on Gothamist have the exclamation point avatar (namely the orange one)?
  • hotstepper
are you really a piece of shit or do you just play one on the interweb?
  • And why can't we put this technology in every health club in America? Then people can exercise for free electricity.
  • emef23
i know there's a new york sports club in nyc that recently (in the last year) got spin bikes for this purpose. it just costs too much money to implement and though the longterm savings are, i'm assuming, great, people/businesses aren't willing to lay out the cash for things like that right now.
  • You can't make this stuff up! The very same people who have inflicted the most "hazards" to the Occupy Wall Street participants....swooped in early yesterday morning with their white shirts and badges, and carted away the OWS generators; ostensibly  because they were deemed " a fire hazard". This, after 45 days of problem-free use, and just before an impending snowstorm!  Of course, they can’t be blamed. They were only following  orders.... of  Mayor Show-Me-The-Permit 0001%, who  sleeps ever so comfortably in his overheated mansion, and makes pompous speeches about the freedoms that we all enjoy, on the 125th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty's dedication. All this just a few short miles from Zuccotti Park. This is not mere double speak....it's super triple speak, on speed AND acid! No matter how pretty you try to make the crap sound...it’s still crap. And more and more people are realizing it. Finally. Lady Liberty must be smiling. "Cause  know I am!
  • RobertMosesSupposesErroneously
I agree with your post - but I've alway's read Lady Liberty's default expression as more of a "mildly disappointed glare"

  • So you think the city should have waited until a tragedy happened before starting to regulate the use of these dangerous items?
  • mistermarkdavis
A tragedy has happened, that's why occupy wall street is there.  complicated financial instruments should be regulated, great point.
  • DP
    LOL
  • arparp
Except the inspection was actually run by the FDNY. Also, '45 days of problem free' use doesn't mean anything is safe, there are poorly constructed buildings that don't fail for years.
  • chee1rs
how much power is generated from each bike ?
  • nvk
If there was a consumer unit available, I'd use it to power my TV. Sure, I'd only be generating about 15 cents of energy per hour, but I'd feel good about it.
  • BKExcuse
Most the kits I've seen can generate about 300W. Even under ideal conditions the average biker is looking at a max of 500W before losses.
  • Spirit of 76
I seriously doubt that. Numerous studies have shown untrained cyclists can only sustain about 1/10 horsepower for any length of time. That's about 75 watts. Add in the losses that small generators have and we're probably talking something in the neighborhood of 25-40 watts of electrical output.
  • BKExcuse
I seriously doubt your 1/10th HP figure.

    .4hp
    http://www.progressiveengineer...

Average rider can sustain .35hp for 2 hours.

Read more closely. Your first link says "a good cyclist." That refers to one with proper training, which should be obvious since MacCready was referencing the design process for the Gossamer Condor. You don't design for someone who takes a leisurely spin to the grocery store when you want a pilot and power source for a human-powered aircraft. Your second link has no citations whatsoever. It's just more of this "if it's on the Net, it must be true" garbage.

Go check out David Gordon Wilson's book, Bicycling Science, which has charts and graphs referencing actual laboratory studies, not uncited information. Even NASA data for "healthy men" in one graph doesn't claim what you claim. Wilson, in case you've never heard of him, is an MIT professor who designed one of the early record-setting recumbent bicycles and was head of the International Human Powered Vehicle Association. He knows a few things about the field.

Also, note that good studies and information, including MacCready, make such measurements on bikes and ergometers set up with proper crank length, saddle height and fore-aft position, torso angle, etc. Good luck getting a good setup with cheap, upright exercise bicycles that protesters and tourists, 99% of whom have no training, are just going to jump on and pedal. I guarantee the seats are going to be too low, pedalers will be sitting too upright to involve the powerful gluteals and they'll be pedaling with their arches at very low cadences, among many other flaws. All of which will lead to very sub-optimal power output.
  • remyngtin
since those white middle class OWS losers are lazy and fat , the electricity generated should light a bulb for about 5 minutes ... tops !!!
  • drew_o
Occupiers will have to work off some of that baby fat.
  • gaelic47
"Baby fat". Clearly, you haven't been down there. I have. There's a lot more middle aged and older people than you'd think. Sure, there are some college aged protesters, but I was shocked at how many people in their 40's and 50's that were all set up for some fall/winter camping.
  • DP
Another "you haven't been down there post." Who cares if the protestors are older? Their minds are childish.

  • chee1rs
OWS losers with no more unemployment  benefits , smoking pot and claiming they are disenfranchised
  • hotstepper
another "i haven't been down there but watch me run my mouth about it post". who cares about your uninformed opinion?
  • Do you have one of your hand grenades with you in the park? Or are you simply showing an attitude of violence to get what you want?
  • stop and go back to curing cancer, which hasn't been cured yet, instead of putting down a movement which u obviously know nothing about.  I haven't seen mention of violence in hotstepper's post.
  • Did you just declare yourself the keeper of who knows what about what? Thanks but no thanks.
I was commenting on his avatar, which is in plain view. Wake up to the obvious.

News reports are that a certain portion of the park has become an area of fear for some protesters due to the fights that have been occurring there.

Just because you don't know how to cure cancer doesn't mean it isn't being done. It's happening every day. Just not in hospitals or in radiologists and oncologist's offices.
  • DP
I actually have walked by. I yelled "A Theory of Justice SUCKED!" to rile them up a bit so they could go fuck up up Tribeca with a clean conscience.
  • luke_1
    congrats
  • drew_o
    Baby boomer fat.
  • As far as I know, they were bought by Occupy Wall Street from their pool of funds that have been donated. The General Assembly voted last week to approve $5,000 to buy 5 bike generators, even before the NYPD/FDNY confiscated the other generators and fuel.
  • shocktheday
You can also attach harnesses from the generators to the drummers' arms, that's an unlimited source of renewable energy.
  • Many of their drums no longer go "BOOM." Apparently a sleep deprived neighbor hallucinated that he'd stabbed several of them with a knife only to discover it wasn't a dream after all.
  • bytheC
Violent teabaggers in the neighborhood?  The ones that carry guns to rallies and throw bricks through windows are now packing knives. No surprise.  Their rallies have all been cancelled.
  • We have no way of knowing who cut the drums, except that it was likely a sleep deprived neighbor due to the specific target that was chosen. There aren't too many tea partiers living in Manhattan, although their numbers might be increasing with the actions of the protesters. So it is unlikely that the vandal was a tea partier - it was just someone who had had enough after a month of little sleep due to the selfish drummers.

The one man who was wearing a gun - legally I might add - was an African American. The news media did not show him in order to keep its story line that Tea Parties are racist.

No tea partier threw a brick through any window that I am aware of. If it did happen, it was a union thug pretending to be a tea partier.

you might be confused with the radical protesters in Wisconsin who did all sorts of damage to the Wisconsin government offfices while they stank up the place and causes many thousands of dollars in damages.

A few tea partiers were beat up by union thugs, but no tea partier has, as yet, perpetrated any violence. An African American tea partier was beaten up by a union thug wearing an SEIU shirt or jacket.

PS. Using the term "teabagger" is a homosexual slur. It's like calling someone a ni**er because it is meant to demean and dehumanize. It's outrageous that you would sink to that kind of despicable insulting name calling.
  • Guest
Thanks for clearing that up Doctor.  They like to project their own atrocities onto their enemies.  Aside from what Bill Maher and Ed Schultz like to incite, the tea party rallies were 100% peaceful.  Unlike these socialist lunatics who are drugged up, raping, stealing, and tried to stab a reporter in the throat the other day. http://www.theblaze.com/storie...
  • Doctor,

you are 100% correct in everything you just related.  of course, the neo-marxists don't care much for facts.  they never have
