Up To 5 Inches Of Snow Projected For NYC Tonight

Ahh, there's nothing like that first snow of the year to remind you that Fall is dead (we had a good two weeks!) and you'll be nestled in Winter's bony embrace for the next nine months. Yes, big fluffy flakes are already falling here in DUMBO, and accumulation predictions in New York City range from a dusting to 2-4 (and "up to 5") inches through 2 a.m. We knew that our great aunt gave us the Air Bud Trilogy on Blu-Ray for a reason.

We have reports that snow is now falling on Harlem, the Upper East Side, Clinton hill, Fort Greene, Astoria, and Forest Hills, and the East Village. While the precipitation is supposed to be mostly rain through the afternoon, it should turn to all snow overnight. Upstate may get pummeled with as much as 12 inches. According to the Daily News, the city's previous snow record was on October 15, 1876 when a "dusting" was measured. Equally as miserable as wet, heavy snow is the wind advisory that's in effect from 4 p.m. to 6 a.m. tomorrow, as gusts are projected to range from 25 to 55 mph. Drop that Prosac into your hot chocolate and relax: you have nowhere to be tonight (anymore).

Update 2:38 p.m.: The National Weather Service now says it's a "historic early season snowstorm for the tri-state area": "THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN UPTON HAS UPGRADED THE WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY TO A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW AND WIND...WHICH IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 2 AM EDT SUNDAY. THE WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT." For the area, the NWS expects accumulation of 6-10" of snow and winds from the north at 20-30 mph, with gusts up to 55 mph. Also, watch out for downed trees and driving conditions will be hazardous, especially after dark.

Mary: You mean you cannot go to the park in the winter! Duh! After dark? If you are so stupid. But really, it is a park and should not be a place that is not maintained properly!

Rats! There goes my Sunday Standing Under A Tree Hoping For A Payday.

  • The parks are all now closed. Anyone still in them -- or stupid enough to go into one -- who gets clobbered by a limb, is SOL on a lawsuit payday.

Maybe some trees should be trimmed in CP BEFORE winter!

    Snowolleen!

There are a ton of downed trees and limbs near and in Central Park. The Park Drive at 79th was partially closed this afternoon due to downed trees. 96th was open, but slow, as people were trying to navigate multiple downed limbs.

I was never worried. Mayor Mike is on the job.

In Little Neck we don't know what the fuss is about. A bit of slush, back to plain rain.

I wouldn't care so much, except that we have 30 new trees on our block which mostly still have their leaves.... I am worried that the weight of the snow plus the leaves will result in some limb breakage. Yes, I know I am a dork -- but I worked hard to get those trees planted, and we already lost 1 during Irene.

giant branch fell into the middle of 76th right by 3rd

With the leaves still on the trees falling branches is a legitimate thing to worry about.  This wet snow is heavy!  People may also want to avoid going into the parks to check out the snow-covered trees.

  • Took a quick walk in Central Park and saw at least 3 branches drop and heard many more than that. Half way through the walk we decided to walk in the middle of the street to avoid getting brained.
