Parent Freak Out: Sex Ed To Be Taught In City Schools Next Year

Brace yourselves: sex ed arrives at the city's middle and high schools next year, and it. Will. Be. SEXY. According to the Post, high school students will note the cost of condoms and "research a route from a school to a clinic that provides birth control and STD tests." Middle schoolers will use "risk cards" to sort activities likes mutual masturbation and oral sex. "I didn't know how much detail they would get," one SoHo mother says, quaintly assuming that students don't already think and talk about sex all the time.

The DOE will require a semester of sex education in sixth or seventh grades and another in the first two years of high school, and schools may use any curriculum they want but are encouraged to use HealthSmart and Reducing the Risk. Both stress "that abstinence is the best way to avoid pregnancy and STD/HIV." The aforementioned SoHo mother, when told what her son may learn, said the subjects "seem pretty outrageous." Surely she'll consult her children on those "outrageous" truths in due time.

  • Read the curriculum, and the text book. This course is not Birds and Bees OR STD's, in fact it's lacking in that area. It's quite a bit of BJ and anal. Occupy the schools.

a federal program I can believe in

Since President Bill Clinton brought the benefits of a good blowjob to the American Public via the Oval Office. . . I feel it's only right that the coming generation of both genters-( or of all four genters! ) learn how to give a decent prick-suck. . . and what better place to learn something than while you're in school!
Also, I think this program- as an respectful nod to Bill Clinton- should be subsidized by Federal funding! ( C'mon- do you think President Clinton would have gotton in all that mess with Monica- if Hillary could deliver a decent blowjob?!?  No! )

  • Sex-Sd was watered down during the Bush administration to abstinence-only or nothing. States that went with nothing actually had better results than the abstinence-only states. TX was heavily abstinence-only to much greater extremes than any other state (the only thing taught about contraception was how often methods failed, nothing on how to use them properly) so kids did not know how to use barrier methods of contraception that prevented STDs. We now have the highest rates of teen pregnancy and teen STDs in the country... Thank you Rick Perry...

they'll be having babies when they're 14 anyway , might as well learn now

  • Kevin_Kramers

huh? didn't they always had sex ed in NYC public schools? I remember having that class towards the end of the 5th grade...

  • Dead Himmler

Parents should be furious that sex is going to be taught in the schools by teachers. Everyone knows that kids should always get their facts about sex from their peers and the internet.

Or a pile of Hustlers they found in the woods.

  • robingee

Yeah, why is there always porn in the woods?

  • Guest

I was 15 by the time I figured out they didn't grow there like mushrooms.

  • this didn't exist in NYC schools until now?

  • If we teach our kids how to have safe sex & lower the rates of unwanted pregnancy, how will our  Crazy Anti-Choice Demonstrators spend their time?

  • schmeep

I learned the same stuff in school, and I'm not a pervert because of the education; I'm a pervert strictly independent of the curriculum, I can assure you.

  • jenon

This seems like a really strong, practical curriculum. Good job DOE.

  • Spirit of 76

This is new? I know we had sex ed class in sixth grade way back in the day. Did they discontinue it in the interim?

  • whatidsay

What you learned was the birds and bees. Today, it's about the STD's.

  • Spirit of 76

No, our class definitely included lessons about herpes, gonorrhea and syphilis, which have been around a very long time. Although they were called "venereal disease" or VD back then.

  • robingee

Yup, we saw a filmstrip on Mr. Herpe, who looked like a hairball and talked like Wolfman Jack. No joke.

  • Guest

Yup- we got this in Catholic school in the 70's.
