The Occupy Wall Street protests which began in NYC just over a month ago went global this weekend—and across the nation, hundreds of protesters were arrested as cops clashed with demonstrators in Chicago, Phoenix, Denver and Raleigh. And in Washington D.C., Dr. Cornel West—who had appeared in solidarity with OWS protesters two weeks ago—was arrested at the Supreme Court steps.

Chicago police arrested approximately 175 Occupy Chicago protestors in Congress Plaza just after 1 a.m. Sunday morning, after they had been warned they were violating municipal code. Protesters had assembled a tent city and formed a human chain while refusing to move from the park. Chi-town resident Joseph Eichler wondered why Mayor Rahm Emanuel wasn't more like a certain local hero: "I'd like to ask why (New York Mayor Michael) Bloomberg let the people stay in the park peacefully and clean up their own mess, and Rahm Emanuel won't let us do the same."

In Phoenix, Arizona, about 40 Occupy Phoenix demonstrators were arrested just after midnight after refusing to clear out of Margaret T. Hance Park, similar to Chicago. Twenty-four people were arrested in Denver amid physical clashes with police in Civic Center, near the state capitol building; and 19 people were arrested
in Raleigh, North Carolina after their permit to demonstrate on the grounds of the state capitol expired.

hate is OK if it comes from Liberals , didn't you know that from history

So 'honk'- if you hate rich people?!?  What a Schmuck Cornel is!
Can anyone tell me why 'hating' rich people, is different from hating black people- or Jewish people- or gay people. . . or even Eskimos?!

ME?!  I just hate broccoli !

  • Poor Cornel.

The protesters will continue to grow and grow.

  • Has the Occupy Movement found a leader in Cornel West?
    http://www.surrealla.com/2011/...

  • No, the leader is Obama. His Department of Energy guaranteed a loan made to the owners of the park three days before the protest started. Only the owners of Zuccotti Park can kick out the protesters. But this is a "you scratch my back, and we'll guarantee your $180 million loan" kind of thing.

These rallies have been Soros/Obama astroturfed since the beginning.

An ivy league professor is spending a night in jail tonight for standing on the steps of the highest court in the land with a picket sign less than two months after he reached millions of citizens by writing about how MLK must be rolling in his grave.

Its like the evil empire is handing the keys to the castle right over on purpose.

What is the justification for arresting West on the Supreme Court steps in broad daylight? I've been curious why more haven't protested at the location in light of the implications of Citizens United.

  • matthew731

The rules against protesting at the Court are SUPER-strict, and so most any act of protest there is civil disobedience.  There was a huge LGBT civil disobedience action there in 1987 after the Bowers v Hardwick decision (which had upheld sodomy laws the previous year, and was finally reversed in Lawrence v Texas in 2003).  As I understand it, the charges were focused simply around protesting on Court property.

Still, I'd like to know what Dr. West was doing/saying today.  Was it about Citizens United?

  • Investigate-NWO-globalists

Quite ironic there's no freedom of speech at the SCOTUS!  Then again, some of the the  Supremes are highly treasonous!

As for Rahm Emanuel, isn't he a Mossad agent?

  • It actually makes sense that they strictly limit the type of protests to only peaceful sit-ins.  Look at the amount of controversial(depending on one's view) decisions they deliberate and hand down.  If they did allow mass vocal protests, nothing would ever get done.  Just look at the fighting over Roe V. Wade, imagine if proponents for both sides were in front of the supreme court everyday protesting.

I was with you on the first sentence...then the second was kind of off, but could have been seen as hyperbole...then the third dove headfirst into the to-be-ignored pool.  Sorry.

  • Investigate-NWO-globalists

You have a lot to learn, son.

  • matthew731

And following up with condescension.  Unsurprising, and not as obnoxious as your earlier Jew-baiting, but still not very persuasive.

  • matthew731

Perhaps I'm slightly off--this article says that he was arrested after refusing to leave the Court steps.  But still, that reflects the rules against political speech there that I referenced before.

And this article mentions the tenth anniversary of the war as part of his message.  But I get the sense that Dr. West said something more articulate, and it got a bit mangled in a quickly posted article.

  • West was arrested in DC, not Toronto. That's very clearly the US Supreme Court.

  • MattyGC

even the twitter link has the DC flag on it.

  • MattyGC

    yeah...wtf

  • MattyGC

Sucks that Gothatmist is covering the Chicago Occupy almost better than Chicagoist. Three paragraphs and four pictures from them. That's it.
