License Plate Peekaboo: Trucker Arrested For Trying To Avoid $65 Toll

Because the toll for his tractor-trailer to go onto the George Washington Bridge is $65, Nelson Vaquiz decided that it was much easier to build a contraption that lifts up and hides his license plate instead of just paying the pesky toll. Except he didn't count on a Port Authority cop to notice the disappearing license plate.

According to the Post, "Nelson Vaquiz was caught allegedly trying to dodge the $65 toll as he hauled a load of iron pipes north on Interstate 95 Saturday at around 6:30 a.m., when a sharp-eyed Port Authority police officer saw the plate mysteriously vanish and reappear." Vaquiz had been in the EZ Pass lane, which would have taken an image of his license plate, and the Post adds, "He also allegedly had the back plate on his trailer bent up so that it couldn’t be read by cameras, sources said."

Officer Jason Malice noticed the mysteriously disappearing plate and sounded an alarm. Vaquiz was charged with theft of service, possession of burglar tools and eluding, plus his tractor-trailer was impounded and he had to pay $5,000 bail.

This isn't the first time someone has tried to dupe the Port Authority, which says it loses millions thanks to toll violations.

This was my idea as a kid! Thief!

$65? Maybe it is the Port Authority that should be charged with a crime?

Under that plate that lifts up, the guy should have had another plate that just displays the middle finger.

Shouldn't that price tag come with a mask and gun? I'm shocked more truckers aren't paying. Time for a convoy!

  • $65? Good for him.
