Videos: Mass Arrests At Occupy Boston, Police Brutality Alleged

Early this morning a contingent of 700 police swept into a park where Occupy Boston protesters had set up camp, arresting over 100 people who refused to comply with an order to vacate. The encampment is not the main OWS site at Dewey Square, but a larger park nearby that protesters had recently seized. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino had pleaded with the demonstrators to leave the park by midnight, and the Boston Herald reports that "the park’s patrons had just spent $150,000 to spruce it up." Here's video, via Charlestown Patch, of police clearing the park around 1:30 a.m., as the crowd chants "the whole world is watching!":

The demonstrators, including many veterans, had linked arms and prepared for arrest in the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway, where they had expanded their footprint after ten days in a smaller park. Others read the Constitution out loud as cops cleared the park, tossing protesters' tents and personal belongings into the trash. “They just ripped the group open, and went for our tents,” said Nicholas Hassell, a 21-year-old grill cook from Franklin. "They shouldn’t be doing this. We have the right to exercise our freedom of speech." Occupy Boston has accused the officers of brutality and violence. Here's video of police arresting a veteran, as the crowd shouts "Shame!":

In an interview this morning, Mayor Menino told a local morning show, "I simplify [sic] with their issues, some of those issues we really have to look at in America, but when it comes to civil disobedience I will not tolerate civil disobedience in the city of Boston." Yes, isn't it great to see the city of Boston continuing its proud tradition of not tolerating civil disobedience?

  • The point is, those cops should show a little more respect to those veterans who fought for those cops to keep their puny jobs. After all, they wouldn't have them if the country was in pieces because we got bombed. But then, even here in Oregon, the wonderful judicial system won't take a complaint against an officer if they hired him. Wonder why that is? It's because, God Forbid they have to openly make their department look bad. As I was once told by an ex-attorney, ex-DA, and now, crooked judge:" I think you have a great case against the police department, one hell of a lawsuit against the state too. But I can't take it, because I have to come to work and eat lunch with these people every day. It would make me look bad if I prosecuted my own."

  • Please, you're from Oregon?, and you think those veterans fought for anyone except the mega corporations and their monopolistic contractors, all in bed with the politicians they keep snuggled in their pockets.  Those veterans were nothing but hired killers for the elitists agendas, agendas that have nothing to do with protecting us or our freedoms or some thug baton twirling, pepper spraying cops job.  It's tiresome hearing these oblivious "war vets" and the citizens supporting them as if they actually saved us from being attacked by terrorists.  These people (you people) were duped ten years ago and (you) they still babble on in "fool" sheeple mode with zombie eyes affixed to FOX and CNN.  After all this time so many still fear the truth, afraid to accept that the people running this country are evil and greedy and don't give a shit about US, our lives or anyone elses in any other country.  Maybe put down your "medical" marijuana bong and join the rest of us in sober reality ville and wake up to the truth that the rest of the world has been aware of for ages.

  • ummm....no....never said I was FROM Oregon, or any other state for that matter actually. And, actually, I haven't had cable since 1996 when I canceled it, so, no I don't bother with fox or cnn. Haven't seen either of those since I was in a bar when the pope finally died in 2005. And....also never said i did pot, in fact i'm allergic...found that out as a teenager. Never said I personally was a vet either, as I'm not, and never would be.  But, I never asked for your opinion either....hmmm....wonder which side of the fence you got caught on? Obviously, you don't know anything, or you'd know those veterans never asked to be at war in the first place.

Why wasn't this posted on Bostonist instead?  Do they have the day off or something?

Boston, we're glad to have you. But I've got to break it to you- The Whole World is NOT Watching Boston.

"the park’s patrons had just spent $150,000 to spruce it up."
The parks patrons also gave express written permission for Occupy Boston to protest there, dated the 6th of October, right down to a pledge to restore the lawn out of their general fund.

    http://www.rosekennedygreenway...

  • The text from your link is:

"The non-profit Greenway Conservancy will be paying to re-plant the grass as part of our regular park operations budget."

I don't read this as a pledge to restore.

  • True, but it also says:

"If a protest or other expression of free speech requires any set up including but not limited to tables and chairs, tents, podiums, or amplified sound, a City permit is required."

They do not have a permit. "Occupy Boston is a spontaneous event and an expression of free speech that did not go through the permitting process with the Conservancy or the City. No one asked for permission. No one gave permission."  And I think they do have tents, so this is a grey area. The text from the letter, given the context, probably intended tents meant for display/demo/booth purposes, but a tent is a tent.

The support is not full-throated as your comment seems to imply. Not that they don't support the occupation, but they are not going to stand up against the police and the City of Boston to support it. As in most things, it's more complcated the more closely it's examined.

  • randomtransplant

I don't think that inserting a caveat that they arn't liable if existing city regulations are not met on their premises diminishes support, it sounds like necessary common sense.

  • Of course. Much of the letter is boilerplate stuff. It does not read like a strong expression of support. It's more of a "let's wait and see what develops" kind of document.

  • randomtransplant

The city of Boston did not issue the necessary permits to facilitate Freedom of Speech and Assembly as they are ostensibly obligated, despite the property owners written consent, and then called these people 'criminals' because they lacked these permits and were unaware of the property owners express support.

You know why prosecutors and metropolitan Mayors make the big bucks? Because they have to support bullshit like this. Why are you?

"In the event that 5 or more armed people or 10 or more people are unlawfully, riotously or tumultuously assembled, the police can demand that they immediately and peaceably disperse."http://www.bpdnews.com/2011/10...

  • I fully support the occupation, their aims, and their goals I just thought your statement was too strongly worded and was not backed up by the document you posted.

C'mon, there are enough commenters you could be sparring with! Go spend your time on whiteirish or roger_the_shrubber, not picking fights with people on your side!

  • LtWorf

Its funny when you hear people complain about Bloomberg when you have even bigger douchebags such as Mayor Menino in Boston.

  • Bernie_Geotz_Squirrel_Luv

    Well, they're both from Boston.

  • diablofreak

Do they expect the cops to disobey a direct order, lose their jobs and add themselves to the pool of the unemployed?

  • That's what the Nazi SS grunts were thinking.

  • luke_1

I am trying so hard to resist capitulating to godwin's law here. Seriously dude: are human beings robots? I don't understand this attitude at all.

  • right, because having a job is better than social justice. Sheep.

  • unretrofiedforu

YOu still believe in that? I thought it was sold off - piece by piece, by miramax and michael moore.
