Earlier this week, the Parks Department removed 16 controversial signs in the predominantly Orthodox Jewish neighborhood of South Williamsburg because they were screwed into public trees. The Yiddish signs, first reported on Failed Messiah, roughly translated to: "Precious Jewish Daughter: Please move to the side when a man approaches!" Today the Daily News checks in on the neighborhood and finds that some of the locals feel the city is suppressing their civil liberties.
"It's taking away freedom of speech," one 70-year-old woman told the News. Another local resident, 18-year-old Abraham Klein, said, "The signs don't bother anybody. Men and ladies don't go together. It's just our religion." The News also spoke with Deborah Feldman, who left the Hasidic community and wrote a book called Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of my Hasidic Roots. She speculates the signs were probably posted as "part of a crackdown on rebellious behavior by women."
Whatever the reason, without the signs things are heating up on the sidewalks of Williamsburg, where proximity to women in wigs and ankle-length dresses is no doubt driving the men to distraction. Next thing you know, the government will be forcing them to look at scintillating photos of that wicked Goy temptress Hillary Clinton!

It's not about freedom of speech, it's about putting something up that looks like a "rule" in a public space (i.e. 'Don't Litter", "Stop", "No Honking", etc.) when it is, in fact, not a rule. If I put up a sign that says "No Crocs Allowed" I'd expect it to be taken down as well. Although we all know Crocs should never be worn. Ever.

Maybe these men should do the wildly radical thing and control themselves. I've always wondered why no one has ever risen up and questioned why women need to cover up for the benefit of men. Are the men really so awful (and horny) that they can't be counted on to keep it in their pants? If they are unable to stop themselves from raping a woman walking down the street just because you can see her natural hair it seems to me they have the problem - not the women. Maybe they should take responsibility for their own actions and not pin their (pretty psychotic-sounding) issues on innocent women. The rest of society can deal with women in pants. What's wrong with them that they can't?
Right-wingers in America go nuts at the non-existent threat of sharia in America, but somehow Williamsburg gets a pass. (not that there's anything wrong with either)

Exactly. All the Muslim bashing that goes on, they only have to look in their own backyards to see the same shit going on under their very noses.
But hey, the Jews are "good" and the Muslims are "bad", thats why they get the pass.

This is something i NEVER understood. Also, for two groups who REALLY hate each other, they sure have a lot in common!

I guess I hope they fight this and win. That would permit me to put my own stop sign on my street. I would also most likely put up a NO BIKES sign.

People are seriously undereducated about (or like to abuse the central ideas behind) the First Amendment. They can't posted bigoted, religious-inspired messages on street trees first and foremost because there's a time, place, and manner restriction on speech which surely encompasses putting your own damn signs on government property. More than that, though, if the government had left these signs up it could be argued they are a violation of the Establishment Clause, which prohibits government promotion of any one religion's views.

Let them do it. It'll only speed up the day when Orthodox Jewish women tell these imbeciles to go screw themselves.

with it would happen but don't hold your breath. It's not going to happen, a sad submissive bunch they are.

really, one of the main problems to these signs was that they were nailed into the trees, which is damaging to said trees.
Yawn. Fundamentalist types always complain their rights are being violated when they don't get special privileges. Guess what, you don't own the tree, therefore you cannot nail your sign to it.
