The Yankees almost puled off a miraculous comeback against Detroit Sunday, but fell short 5-3. Trailing 5-1 entering the 9th, Nick Swisher led off with a home run. Jorge Posada followed with a triple (yes really a triple) and Russel Martin walked. With runners on the corners and no outs, Andruw Jones laced a ball to right, but it was caught. Jorge Posada scored on the play to make it 5-3. Derek Jeter struck out and Curtis Granderson walked, bringing Robinson Cano to the plate as the winning run with the rain pouring down. Cano hit a soaring pop up near the Tigers dugout for what should have been the third out, but the Tigers' catcher stumbled and couldn't make the play. The stage was set for a Hollywood ending, but Cano grounded out to second and the series is all tied up.
The Giants mounted a big comeback, with a huge blown call by the refs as the pulled out a 31-27 victory over Arizona. New York led 10-6 at halftime, but the Cardinals stormed out to a 27-17 lead in the fourth quarter behind three Beanie Wells touchdown runs. New York got the ball back with 5:16 left on the clock and Eli took them down the field in 1:39, completing a a pass to Jake Ballard to bring the Giants back within three.
The Giants' defense forced a three and out on Arizona and after the offense took the ball back, the refs gave New York a gift. Eli Manning hit Victor Cruz across the middle of the field and Cruz stumbled down after the catch, releasing the ball as he got back up. But, since he hadn't been touched, it was a live ball and Arizona recovered. However, the refs had ruled that Cruz had given himself up, a call which cannot be challenged. It remained Giants' ball and on the next play Manning hooked up with Nicks on a 29-yard strike. It was their second touchdown in 58 seconds of game time and it allowed them to leave Arizona in a tie for first place.
Baltimore's defense was able to outscore the entire Jets team, 18-17 (21-17 if you count extra points). Totally a close game, right? Wrong. Not only did the Ravens have three TDs from their defense — two fumbles returned for TD and one interception return for TD — they also had one score on the ground, resulting in their 34-17 win. Mark Sanchez was a dismal 11 of 35 for 119 yards and one interception. He also fumbled the ball FOUR times, losing three of them. The Jets are now 2-2 and play at New England next Sunday.
