Spike Lee Isn't Working On A Sequel To Do The Right Thing

sep2111spike.jpg Earlier this summer, rumors began flying that Spike Lee's latest project, Red Hook Summer, was a sequel to his 1989 Bed-Stuy-set breakout hit Do The Right Thing. Now, as more details have emerged about Lee's hush-hush project, it looks like that might not be the case...sort of.

Lee, who's never been one to hold back his opinions about much of anything, tweeted last night: "Red Hook Summer is not a Sequel to Do The Right Thing and it has nothing to do with Brooklyn Loves MJ. Subject Matter? New Spike Lee Joint YO." While Lee has confirmed that he'll be reprising his role as Mookie from Thing, the rest of the cast are all basically unknowns, leading IndieWire to guess that Mookie will make only a brief cameo.

The film centers around an Atlanta native who is spending the summer in Red Hook, though it's unclear whether the flick is set in the present day or the cobblestone-lined past. Either way, we're psyched for another Spike Lee joint, and are keeping out fingers crossed for a possible Rosie Perez cameo as well...

I thought he was releasing another "Brooklyn" themed Absolut vodka bottle, being the authority of Brooklyn and all.

I just got a $ 829.99 iPåd2 for only $ 103.37 and my mom got a $ 1498.99 HDTV for only $ 251.92, they are both coming with USPS tomorrow. I would be an id!ot to ever pay full retàil prìcès at placès like Wàlmàrt or Bèstbuy. I sold a 37" HDTV to my boss for $ 600 that I only paid $ 78.24 for.

Malcolm X should have gotten at least an Oscar for Denzel Washington.

DTRT wasn't nominated for best picture, but Driving Miss Daisy won.  Just sayin'

  • if you want to see rosie perez again just go to fort greene after 9pm. she is usually there walking her dog. i thought do the right thing was terrible. it go so much hype that i thought i had missed something and tried re watching a few years ago. still terrible.

I hated that movie. It enraged me. You know what would have been doing the right thing? Not setting a store on fire and then still asking for your money. I wanted to kill those people. Talk about making an entire movie around not taking responsibility for your actions and acting generally like a savage.

Do the Right Thing was more about how working-class people (Italians in this case) interacted with poor people (blacks in this case) in a segregated neighborhood.  One of the many things that was shown is how people who really have very in common were divided & separated from each other by poverty, bigotry, & ignorance, much like your above comment!

You know what would be news?  To learn that Spike Lee lost that smug look from his face.

  • shocktheday

It would be pretty pathetic for Mookie to be still complaining about the "system" when since DTRT came out, underprivileged immigrants have been able to come here and succeed. Actually, it was pretty pathetic then too.
