R.E.M. has officially called it quits, with the following brief statement:
To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening.
While we await the reunion tour, let's revisit some classics... and that time this week that Michael Stipe showed us the unofficial member of the band.

From the stunning Chronic Town and Murmur to the song that makes the world want to scratch its eyes out (Losing My Religion), they had quite a run. Something for everyone.

i'd have to disagree and nominate "Shiny Happy People" as the self-inflicted eye-gouging song. my nomination speech is by Denis Leary:
"Hey, hey, hey! Pull this bus over to the side of the pretentiousness turnpike! I want everybody out, I want the shiny people over here and the happy people over here! I represent angry, gun-toting, meat-eating fucking people!...Sit down and shut the fuck up, Michael."

You win hotstepper! Totally forgot about that POS song. Hope to fucking god it doesn't somehow become lodged in my brain leading me to hum the tune for the next day. THAT would suck.

I'm sure that "Everybody Hurts" saved a lot of people. R.I.P. R.E.M.
