Bloomberg: Cops Dirty Dancing At West Indian Parade Is Great Ad For NYC

091411cops.jpg Soon after the NYPD confirmed it was launching an investigation into NYPD officers caught on video "daggering" dancers during the West Indian-American Day Carnival, Commissioner Ray Kelly and Mayor Bloomberg downplayed the incident. At a press conference yesterday, Kelly acknowledged that the behavior was regrettable, but also pointed out that it's not like the officers forced themselves on the women. "I would prefer that it not have happened," Kelly told reporters. "But I don’t want to make too much of it. You know, these young women approached the officers. They didn’t go out of their way to be approached like this."

Bloomberg also had a mixed reaction to the video, calling it "a little bit of poor judgment" but also reminding everyone that in other parts of the world, citizens are terrified of the police and would never dare bend over in their presence, for fear they might be violated in the most brutal way. "Quite the contrary here," Bloomberg told reporters, declaring that visitors "think police officers are what’s going to keep them safe and help them." Like if you're ever too drunk to get out of a cab, or even simply on your way to work, the NYPD has got your back!

As such, New York should be proud of the officers' behavior at the parade! As Bloomberg put it, the video might even be "a great advertisement for New York." Come to New York, The Big Dagger?

On the one hand the "decent law-abiding citizens of NYC are supposed to respect the police,& obey the tenets of the law.I for one,am appalled and quite frankly outraged by these officers blatant disregard for the oath they swore to uphhold, their 'lack' of professionalism and their callous act of 'public indecency'! Again bloomberg and kelly should not allow this violation to be dismissed without the imposition of some departmental sanction/s,clearly it is a violation, and they are indeed very much aware of it. And as for the women who engaged in this act with the officers, i hope you realize that the type of action you displayed only further the "negative" stereotypes attributed to you and your "proud"West Indian heritage and  culture. For the many who saw this as  just "dancing " and having fun and 'no big thing'. There were just as many if not more who saw it as extremely distasteful, disgusting, and yes "a big thing! And you wonder why others have very little or no respect! Stop disrespecting yourself!

bloomberg and kelly are making light of this rules violation of departmental policy and down-playing it because of who the"{police} players" are that's involved. It's very clear that the police who are violating departmental policies are not "Afro-American"  or 'Latino' police, because EVERYBODY knows that if they were, WASP et;al, would be screaming for their 'heads'! But because they are not, then its alright. Somehow the issue of their blatant violation of dept. policies is "swept under the rug" because "those women" initiated the act by "first approaching" them!
So new york's finest violated no dept.rules when they help themselves to a little west indian "booty" while in uniform and supposedly on "duty". No matter how bloomberg, kelly,& the media define this violation,it is nonetheless a violation of dept. policies! " any person who wilfully,& intentionally interferes with a 'peace officer'....in this case a 'police officer' in the performance of his/her duties is subject to being placed under arrest!" The charge would be assault, irregardless of how "minor" the assault & the manner in which it is done,a simple"brush" against a police officer  while in the performance of their duties can and has resulted in an arrest. We all know why it was not done in this case! But to make the case more explicit, the officers involved further enhanced the matter by perpetrating what can be construed as a "sexual assault on the women".when they engaged in an act of 'overt explicit  public sexual behavior". If nothing else they should be charged with "implicit sexual public indecency" The parade organizers had obtained a carnival permit that spelled out the details of the carnival, which included the dresswear, costumes and other paraphanalia, the parade participants would display throughout and along the parade route!

The "uniformed" police on duty had no such permit nor permission that would allow them to 'participate in any way shape or form along with the "participants" nor "spectators. Therefore the
'conduct and behavior of those police officers who wilfully engaged in such act is clearly in violation of the NYPD rules and as such said police officers should be charged accordingly!

wtf   its wrong with people they were dancing and having fun     let them be happy
if you are not going to die for me    why would you want to live my life .

Please do not take any action against the police officers that were dancing in the parade. They helped the community have a better relationship with the police department. Foronce it was great to see officer being involved and the people were loving them. I wouldhate to see these innocent officer get penalized for their behaviors. I know the media ismaking a mockery of them but it was great to see police being involved in the parade. Ibelieve they did an excellent job securing the parade. It would brake my heart if anydepartmental action was taken against them. We need more police officer like these menthat are not afraid of showing their human side. I do not know who these officer werebut I would like to thank them for their services.

As Bloomberg put it, the video might even be "a great advertisement for New York."

Come to New York and bend over for NYPD! Sounds like a great ad campaign. So, Mr. Mayor, when do we get to see you do some daggering? Wouldn't that be an even better ad?

  • Jimbo853okg

Really, too many cheap shots here. The cops may not be too smart (big surprise), but they weren't creating a dangerous or threatening situation either.

  • ronshapley

Im amazed the cops would even lay a hand on these skanks(sp)

  • ButtPlugs

This was very brief and I think even if they were dancing or not they wouldn't react until shots were fried. Working parades are a bitch and having a wee bit of fun wouldn't hurt anyone.

Also Soca/Dancehall is fun and full of positive energy, blame the Caribbeans :P

  • sincerely cannot believe anyone could be upset about this - especially people who are conspicuously silent about the 73 shots fired by "professional" police, one of which killed Denise Gay.

There's community outreach, and then there's community outreach.

  • bkscooter

It's quite unprofessional for the police, but as someone near Columbia was quoted on one of the news channels last night (implying they knew more than I do), it's relatively common to dance with onlookers in that manner at home.

I think it just means we had too many policepersons there.

  • whiteiris

It's a good thing that cop wasn't smoking a cigarette, drinking a coke and eating some trans fat. Then we'd hear about the cop being fired.

  • boobloomberg

I think it's unprofessional, frankly.  Also, keep in mind that KingMike might have NYPD give YOU a ticket for daggering in  the streets like that.

  • randomtransplant

Of course Bloomburg wouldn't see anything wrong with this.

He's let his rank & file employees walk all over him for ten years now, and his personal appointments have a habit of going down in blazes of tabloid glory.

Thats the problem with 3rd-term lame ducks. They don't even want your respect any more.

  • i dont think its a big deal that they were dancing like that. because like it was said, those girls DID come over to the cops. its not about that. its more about... WHO IS WATCHING FOR DANGER? im pretty sure if someone pulled a gun or a weapon or a fight started, they wouldnt be as alert as they would be if they were PAYING ATTENTION TO THEIR JOB!

  • RammyH

Dude, even if the women hadn't danced up to the cops - the cops were standing with approx. 100,000 people directly behind them, so the "WHO IS WATCHING FOR DANGER" noise has got to stop.

Anyone of that massive horde could have grabbed a cop's gun, bashed their heads in, started shooting and those cops would've had .0005% of a chance of doing anything about it.  The people there weren't put at any additional risk/danger by the dancing.

  • garnetlove

It was only about a minute long. And nothing happened. Lighten up!

  • yeah youre right. next time youre at work WORKING, be sure to dry hump passers by. its totally professional and what you were paid to be doing.

  • ButtPlugs

You're right, Cops should be that hardnose asshole no one likes instead of having fun with the crowd.

  • edgie168

    you sound quite jelly.
