Video: Check Out Construction, CGI At One World Trade Center

With the tenth anniversary just days away, World Trade Center developer Larry Silverstein has created a video that shows the progress (which has been remarkable) at the site and what the site and One World Trade Center (the former Freedom Tower) eventually will look like, courtesy of some CGI.

The Observer was at a WTC construction update that included Silverstein, Mayor Bloomberg, 9/11 Memorial architect Michael Arad and other WTC officials and reports, "There wasn’t much news, but it was impressive to see the efforts being made to attract more tenants to the site (Condé’s in, but UBS is out). There are interactive touch screens with neighborhood amenities and transportation news—as though there were any question Tribeca and FiDi is a worse place to work than Midtwon—plus a 12-foot model of the finished site. It’s so big, the 1 WTC antenna is clipped to fit under the soaring ceilings."

  • There are some major issues involved in this building and I think it can be seen as a kind of metaphor for the American economy and attitude toward labor in recent years. I saw a story about 1 WTC this morning on Democracy Now! that discussed the fact that much of the material for the building is supplied by foreign providers like Germany and China! Moreover, there are currently only two tenants who've offered to lease the office space, and they are paying a HEAVILY subsidized price. More people should be aware of the issues involved in this site, and not just look at it as a clean little punctuation point to our many years of dealing with the consequences of 9/11 and "The War on Terror." Here is a link to their website. http://www.democracynow.org. They have a really great archive of their footage over the last 10 years too, if you're interested: http://www.democracynow.org/ta...

Can't they just flatten the top of tower 2 & add 12 ft to the height and make things what they were?

  • I wanna see some CGI showing what the "185-foot windowless concrete base" (for "security") is gonna look like, cause it certainly sounds awful...

[Of course it needn't necessarily be awful—castles tend to be pretty much all windowless stone base, and they're generally pretty cool—but I certainly don't trust the mishmash of random architects, government agencies, and greedy developers who have been screwing with the WTC plans to pull it off...]
