Now that you've seen Lady Gaga in all her non-makeup, non-Kermit coat glory, how'd you like to see her from the middle of a chilly, packed-in crowd in the middle of Times Square? Dick Clark-in-training Ryan Seacrest announced today that Gaga will perform at Times Square to ring in 2012 on New Years Eve.

It's a good thing Gaga still has the adoration of Seacrest and millions of fans, since many of her celebrity idols seem to be abandoning her lately. First, Bette Midler accused her of stealing a routine. And now, Madonna has royally dissed the singer, telling magazine Le Soir, “I have no comment on her obsessions related to me, because I do not know if it is based on something profound or superficial.” Hmm...was it more profound or superficial when Madonna asked the engineers to record Lenny Kravitz making her orgasm for her hit "Justify My Love?"

In the last several years, New Years' Eve in Times Square has been turned from a vigorous, vivid public gathering into a dull corporate advertising exercise featuring second-rate performers and mobs of simple-minded tourists penned up by bored cops.  Maybe Lady Gaga can change that, although it seems like it's going to be heavy lifting.  Everything the corporate advertising culture touches, it sinks.
