Taco Bell And KFC Want Your Food Stamps

sep6stamps.jpg
Should you be able to buy a Double Down with food stamps?

Food stamps are all the rage these days—one in five New Yorkers are on 'em, using stamps to pay for everything from Wonder bread to organic Japanese eggplant. So it makes sense that more businesses would want a piece of the food stamp pie—businesses like fast food restaurants, to be exact.

As more establishments are approved to accept food stamps, fast food restaurants want in, too. Taco Bell, KFC, Pizza Hut and Long John Silver's are some of the chains lobbying to get with the program, which has some big money behind it—food stamp benefits rose from $28 billion to $64 billion between 2005 and 2010.

Anti-hunger advocates support the move—Coalition for the Homeless said that for people who don't live near a grocery store and can't afford a restaurant, "This would allow people to get a reduced price meal at a small deli or a restaurant, and that does include fast-food restaurants." Federal officials have already rejected Bloomberg's attempts to ban people from buying soda with food stamps, and fast food isn't that different.

But public health advocates say the government shouldn't be subsidizing fast food. "It's preposterous that a company like Yum! Brands [owner of Taco Bell, KFC, Pizza Hut and Long John Silver's] would even be considered for inclusion in a program meant for supplemental nutrition," said a spokeswoman for Yale's Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity. Fast food leads to public health complications that will probably weigh even more heavily on taxpayers in the future, so...you know, vicious cycle.

I bet you think you should be President too huh? -___-

ronald reagan sucked must be on some sort of government assistance because he seems to have all day to run his mouth, and not have to actually get up and go work somewhere instead of ironically complaining to people about how stupid they are when he reciprocates enough stupidity onto himself because of his evident inability to give a response without a hardcore bias or an immature condescending tone. Grow up.

  • People should have to stand in line for all their meals in Soup Lines like they had to during the Great Depression. Every Main Street in America would be overflowing with starving people? Somehow I think most people would find food themselves before having to stand in line all day! Americans are pretty lazy you know...

  • You're right, being poor isn't shitty enough yet. Having no health insurance and living paycheck to paycheck isn't shitty enough yet. Let's pile some public humilation on top of- next time they'll know better than to be alive when the economy blows up.

  • So a dmv clerk should get the same calories as a courier?

Food stamps are welfare. And taxpayers pay for welfare. It's supposed to be a handup, not a handout.Whatever happened to personal pride. No wonder we have a piece of junk for presi dent.

  • Most food stamp programs now include work requirements. For example, here in California if you don't work at least 20 hours a week you can only get food stamps for 3 out of every 36 months. It has been this way since the mid-90s, ever since Bill Clinton 'ended welfare as we know it.' Obviously the point didn't get across, because idiots like you are still running around throwing out stereotypes based on a version of welfare that hasn't existed for almost 20 years.

You have no idea what you're talking about. You should do less talking, more listening and more reading.

    It's still a handout libtard

  • most walmart workers get food stamps because walmart does not pay them enough.  you probably support this.

  • In general most people on food stamps have jobs. This is completely lost on these people, and frankly is irrelevant to their take on this. They aren't interested in anything other than an opportunity to bash the poor and whine about taxes, facts be damned.

  • Food Stamps are welfare for food companies.  If they can be used at fast food restaurant. they will be welfare for fast food companies

meant president of the coaliton for the homlessness. he should step down immediately!!!!!!

  • felixthecat

Coalition for the homelessness is the prime example why hundreds and hundred of millions of our tax money used for homelessness and yet nothing is ever accomplished.  fucking president was probably paid for by the fast food industry yet no real check nor balances in this city which is governed by billionaires.

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME.  WHEN WILL ALL THIS CORPORATE WELFARE END. WE ALREADY SUBSIDIZED THE MEAT, DIARY AND POULTY FACTORY FARMS AND NOW THIS SHIT.   THIS FUCKING COUNTRY IS RUN BY PRESIDENT CORPORATE AMERICA.

  • should government subsidize cigarrettes and smoking? many of you know that leads to health problems down the road, which cost taxpayers BILLIONS in dollars a year in medicaid bills.

same thing with obesity.  should we allow government to subsidize people on a fast food diet, and have them cost  taxpayers more billions when we have to foot the medicaid bills?

"...a recent survey found that the most severe hunger-related problems in the nation are in the South Bronx, long one of the country’s capitals of obesity. ... the hungriest people in America today, statistically speaking, may well be not sickly skinny, but excessively fat.

... But the Bronx’s hunger and obesity problems are not simply related to the lack of fresh food. Experts point to a swirling combination of factors that are tied to, and exacerbated by, poverty......  Poor people “often work longer hours and work multiple jobs, so they tend to eat on the run,” said Dr. Rundle of Columbia. “They have less time to work out or exercise, so the deck is really stacked against them.”"

If you are "hungry" and you are obese, clearly, you are not hungry enough. If you ate 3 hamburgers from mcdonalds a day, you would still be under the 2,000 calorie limit. It would be impossible for you to be obese. If you are fat, and you MUST eat fast food bc thats all you can find, then eat less. You can't get fat by being hungry, it's simply impossible and total BS.

  • Sort of, hunger slows down metabolism though, however the SNAP program is designed to give folks enough money to pay prep share,
would you give your child enough money to stay at a midwest motel
and then say , you are being sent to manhattan, the child will run out of money within a week or so, in other words it makes no sense

I have lived by that Food Bazaar for ten years. They have been selling tons of fruit and vegetables there for that whole time. There were no condo dwelling hipsetrrati here ten years ago, so who do you think was buying it? Or do you think that the Chinese owners just stocked all that stuff for years waiting for the day when white people would move in and need fresh produce. Please shut up, you do not know what you are talking about.

As far as the trash from McDonalds, don't let me examine the amount of cigarette butts littering the street outside of Duck Duck or Don Pedros. Is there a way to blame that on welfare recipients too?

  • Glad I'm not the only one with a functioning brain. People can try to excuse and rationalize themselves however they want, but it always comes back around to finding a socially acceptable way to call poor people scum.
