US Open Tennis Officials Warn Players About "Twittering"

OMG! TOTES! via @serenawilliams

Leave it to the sport of super-shushing and scurrying little servant boys to demand the air remain rarefied enough for people to smack a ball back and forth over a net.

RWW transcribes a written warning found in the players' lounge of the US Open, which warns against "Twittering." After noting how great Twitter is for fans "to become more engaged in you and the sport," it jumps to the "dangers posed by Twittering as it relates to the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program rules…Twittering is not allowed on court during a match," and bars "communication of any kind during your match to a person off court for the purposes of sending information about the match…is prohibited." Grunting like a neoprene-clad cro-mag is perfectly fine.

So Serena Williams, Andy Roddick, and all other Tweeting tennis players: beware! Your hundreds of thousands of followers are going to have to miss out on your to-the-second updates on how your shorts are chafing you or how you're blinding your opponent with the reflection from your diamond necklace. OR, you could choose the route of Chad "Please Just Talk About Me, Please?" Ochocino and just cold victory Tweet after an ace. We know you're not afraid of the repercussions.

The ban on tweeting during the match is a nod to the Davydenko non-scandal...and is a rule in place by the NFL and NBA, I think.

But hey let's rip the sport because it's elite and for the rich, right!?!

  • Is this about sports gambling... on tennis?
I guess that would make watching tennis fun.

And, I'd rather go with the socio-economic class warfare based disdain, rather than one based on race.

"But hey let's rip the sport because it's elite and for the rich, right!?!"

Nah let's rip into it because the only people who watch it are white people and asians.

    That's pretty ignorant of you.

Tennis is a pretty global sport. You can't lump white people all into one group. A Swiss, two Spaniards, Serb, Swede, and Brit/Scot are the best men in the world. Pretty distinct history for each of those "white people."

Also, who cares if only white people and Asians follow it. Ever been to a MLB game? Granderson made a joke that he couldn't find a face like his at most ballparks. Should baseball be skewered and given the hyperlink treatment in a CR post too?

What is the correct racial makeup of a fan base, edgie168?

You seem to know what's right for every thing/sport/person.

You're pretty thin skinned for someone who's been on Gothamist for as long as you have.
