Video: What Is This Sad Creature Walking Through Irene-Flooded NYC?

2011_08_mysterycreature.jpg

During yesterday's coverage of flooded New York City streets, a WCBS 2 camera filmed an animal making a labored walk through muck. The people discussing Hurricane Irene don't comment on the creature, which looks like a rat, opossum, ferret, or a giant monitor lizard. Check out the footage:

Armchair biologists, what do you think? And is it any relation to this monster?

  • Poor possum  :(

  • werepossum

Definitely an opossum.  'Possums have very distinctive ears, feet, and tails; you can see the first two clearly, and the tail is glimpsed a couple of times.

  • That thar's vittles!!

  • Maybe it's a super-rat.

  • JRod5417

That's definitely a possum. Its tail is hidden under the water, but you can tell from the head and ears that its not an ordinary rat. I've seen some in Carroll Gardens, mostly as roadkill though. :-(

  • John D

I believe its a musk rat

  • Kara Kuliga

there is no way that is a possum as it is much larger and does not have similar characteristics to a possum (tail, structure, feet/legs).

  • theskinnyjerk

totally with you kara,  that aint no possum

  • Uh oh - looks like CNN took it down. Here's the same link on Youtube:

  • Nutria? As in Kramer's "rat hat."

  • So happy you shared this Jen! Cracking me up to read all the responses as I still have no idea what it really was! It still walks like a damn giant lizard to me, with it's hands pointed inward. But I've heard possum a lot too.

  • randomtransplant

Probably possium - maybe a ferret, unreported because you can't have a pet ferret in the city (I've heard). Hard to tell without context, hard to tell how big that guy is.

  • JaiDee Valentine

There is no way that is a ferret.  Ferrets are small and would get washed away too easily and not climb out of water like this little guy is.

  • Roger_the_Shrubber

Possums were let loose in the city to eat the rats. It didn't work. Now we have even bigger, nastier creatures running around. Another brilliant government program.

  • Politburo

    not true, of course.

  • The Great Arturo Bandini

City Councilmember Domenic Recchia (D-Coney Island) claims the city is responsible for the growing possum population.
    About
10 years ago, “There was a rat problem in Marine Park and Gerritsen
Beach so they brought the possums in to target the rats,” Recchia
explained. “These possums weren’t supposed to be able to duplicate, to
have babies. It turns out that they had babies. Now, they’re pretty much
    everywhere and they’re a problem.”

Possums? Why not cats? There are tons in the shelters and killing rats should kinda be their thing.

  • I call FAKE video.

  • Maybe it's a vole.

  • drew_o
