I get a kick out of how the talking heads on the news spend all the time warning everyone to head to high ground and how foolish and dangerous it is to be outside. Then then pan to a reporter standing on the beach getting whipped by the wind talking about how windy it is. http://bit.ly/nrAUlt 

It's a freakin' tropical storm! Having gone thru several hurricanes including a Category 3 why all the drama? New York will do just fine' but lighten up on the drama-NYC isn't the only place that has had to deal with this.

As a participant I was deeply inspired by all manner of passer-bys eagerly jumping in to help. 
This great and spontaneous tile memorial went up Sept 12th 2001. Today Aug 27th 2011- it was spontaneously and lovingly dismantled- to be preserved...WOW- I LOVE YOU NEW YORK and Thank You to All Those Loving Hands and Helpers Today!! ;D
