The Yankees came within inches of mounting one of their best comebacks of the year. Trailing the A's 6-0 entering the 8th, New York rallied for three runs on a Nick Swisher homer to cut the lead in half. Jorge Posada got them within two with a homer in the 9th and New York loaded the bases with only one out. But, Mark Teixeira popped out and a walk to Robinson Cano made it 6-5 bringing Swisher back to the plate with a chance for more dramatics. He came close, blasting a 2-0 pitch to deep center, but he picked the wrong part of the park and his bid for a game-winning homer fell harmlessly into an Oakland mitt on the warning track to give the A's the 6-5 win.
Jon Niese got shellacked, surrendering eight runs in four innings and the Mets dropped their fifth-straight game 9-4 to the Phillies. Lucas Duda hit his 8th homer of the year, providing one of the few highlights for New York.
Cappie Pondexter had a huge 4th quarter to lead the Liberty to a 74-70 win in Phoenix.
