A Dry Week Ahead, Possibly Followed by Hurricane Irene

Nearly two inches of rain over the weekend making this month the second rainiest August on record in Central Park. We're now only 0.77 inches behind the 1995 record of 12.36 inches. With ten days remaining and hurricane Irene potentially coming up the East Coast there is a fighting chance we'll break that old record.

Any precipitation will have to wait a few days though. The dew point is plummeting this morning as dry air behind last night's front arrives. Mostly sunny skies are expected today, tomorrow and Wednesday. High temperatures each day will hover around 80 degrees. The humidity looks like it will start to increase again late Wednesday or sometime Thursday as a weak cold front arrives later in the week. Behind that front will be a sunny and dry Friday.

Next weekend's weather really depends on what happens with hurricane Irene. Irene passed over Puerto Rico overnight with sustained 75 mph winds. Next up for Irene is Hispaniola. The storm is then expected to strengthen and travel up the East Coast, where the forecast models have it coming ashore anywhere from south Florida to Cape Cod (hey, it is still early), but be prepared for heavy rain and flooding next weekend.

this better be a spectacular motherfucker, or else.

  • Umm.. I'm supposed to be going camping this weekend. What are the chances of this thing slowing  or speeding up enough to not make it a total wash out?

Wow, crap, I remember at least one of the crazy rain storms in 1995.  It was definitely a weekend because a bunch of friends were over and we had been playing Sega all day.  It started pouring buckets mid afternoon and we all dropped the game controllers and ran outside and freaked out for some reason.

Wait, so according to the graph the wettest august was in 1990.  I guess the rain storm I mentioned above during 1995 was a fluke?

  • Joe_Schumacher

Oh, crap!  The graph is correct.  I wrote the wrong year in the text.  1990 was the wettest August and 1995 was the driest.

Got it, then that crazy rain storm must have been a total fluke.
