Michele Bachmann Enjoys Leading Iowa Pack, Foot-Long Corn Dog

Today, Iowa is (kind of) important. At the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines, Republican presidential hopefuls are jockeying for a momentum boost in the Ames Straw Poll, which is an early test of organizational mettle going into the Iowa caucuses in the winter. It's an opportunity for candidates to get heckled, eat fried food, and laugh at Ron Paul. This year, the top three candidates are likely to be Michele Bachmann, Ron Paul, and Tim Pawlenty, but yesterday, only one candidate displayed the guts to swallow the competition.

Michele Bachmann shows us what she's made of, via Toby Harnden at the Telegraph

Toby Harnden of the Telegraph snapped this photo of Bachmann eating a "foot-long corn dog—a chicken and beef sausage in deep fried batter." After an application of mustard (no ketchup? seems socialist to us) "she chomped into it with gusto." Perhaps Tina Brown and Newsweek should have waited another week for a photo more befitting of Bachmann's "intensity," because this is the face of someone who has peered into the chasm of the Oracle at Delphi and is brimming with visions (delirious, meaty visions) of America's bright future.

The photographer who shot this very real photo, Toby Harnden, is a Brit working for the UK's Daily Telegraph; he isn't even a Democrat. There are similar photos taken from other angles by photographers who were also in the scrum. Harnden's was simply the best-composed and the most hilariously unflattering.

On a personal note, may I offer my condolences: I know you have a terminal case of crack-potism, but thought you had kicked your BID (bold italics disease).

None of the MALE candidates were photographed eating a foot long corn dog. Why do we suppose that's true? Yes, it's absolutely unfair that women candidates have to be careful about eating something so phallic on camera, but one would assume that someone in her camp is being paid to think ahead as to how every photo op is going to look.
