Video: Escaped Bull Runs For Its Life Through Queens

081111steer.jpg

And here we have video of a bull or a steer that escaped from a Queens slaughterhouse running along Liberty Avenue in Jamaica. Bystanders, including the YouTube user who took the video, laugh gleefully as the noble beast runs for its life, ultimately winding up trapped on the grounds of York College campus of the City University of New York. There it sought sanctuary in one of the buildings at the health and physical education complex but Fox 5 reports, "ended up hitting construction scaffolding that was set up around the buildings."

Finally, two men, one still wearing a slaughterhouse cover-up, managed to subdue the animal and bring its desperate dash for freedom to an end. It all sounds very slapstick and farcical, as long as you don't dwell on the fact that by the time you read this, it has probably been slaughtered.

  • Aren't there any china shops along that route?  Such a missed opportunity.

  • Bummer.  I really thought the poor guy would be pardoned as well.

For those of you who couldn't click-through, the Treehugger link says this:

    Update:

Sadly, no news has come announcing that this bull has been
'pardoned,' so it seems likely that he was sent back to the butcher. But
if you're feeling sad for his fate and aren't a vegetarian already,
maybe it's time to think about dropping the meat- and saving more than
    one animal's life.

(They do have a link to another pardoned cow though.)

Why do you think these innocent animals escape from the slaughterhouses is BECAUSE THEY WANT TO LIVE AND NOT DIE. They bleed like us too and feel pain more than we do. I pray for this innocent soul. Please stop killing these innocent sentient animals for your selfish palate.  You can control their lives with your dollars..You buying meat is directly link to their murders..

  • Something tells me it escaped from that awful Halal slaughter house that I pass on the LIRR every day...

  • Gothamist, the link to your "happy ending" isn't working.

  • Gepap

This slaughterhouse seems to have one of these incidents every damn year. You'd think they would learn how to keep their animals under control.

If I find out this is the same farm that my 15 yr old dog is at, I am going to be very bummed.

  • The cow actually did win in the end. She gets to live on a farm.

  • What a pile of bull THIS is :D

  • Stacy_Anne

And here I thought nothing ever happened in Queens. If only he'd escaped long enough to start a twitter like the cobra and the peacock. Now Brooklyn and Staten Island need to step up to the plate with some loose wild animals. Even Jersey had a baboon. I'm thinking it's time for an elephant.

  • CEEECEEE

he should get a free pass for his gumption.

  • Vernon6

That cow definitely wasn't headed for the aging room at Peter Luger. More like a halal cart.

  • pvbklyn

Well he's a bull and he heard that the bulls were showing strong on Wall Street today.  Whaddaya expect?

  • RhubarbPlatypus

    Felix?

  • :-( ....

  • maatthias

Wall Street analogy fail. Got nothin.

  • That's awful = / I was hoping to read that the cow was rescued...now that's so sad!

  • To make you feel better..

    Ugh. Vegetarianism beckons.

  • Fluffhead513

    Come... join the dark side...

Seriously, I think the only place where it's easier to be vegetarian than NYC is India/SE Asia.
