The Internet Wants Bert And Ernie To Get Gay Married

aug10bert.jpg
BFFs, not BFs.

Poor Bert and Ernie. The internet will just not leave the two best friend/ roommates/ ambiguous sleepover pals alone—once again, the duo's sexuality is being questioned, as a new petition circulates calling for the two to tie the knot. Were the Avenue Q puppets not enough?

Opinions across the web are divided: "I have to admit that the very thought of it brought a sort of Monty Pythonesque grin to my face... there is a very positive method to the apparent madness of the petition. It’s about teaching tolerance, and saving the lives of LGBT children," writes the Montreal Gazette, while The Lonely Conservative, unsurprisingly, disagrees: "Let’s hope [your kids aren't fans of Sesame Street], unless you want them indoctrinated by the radical LGBT activists... The worst part is the taxpayer funded PBS will probably give this idea serious consideration." Or...they won't.

Sesame Street producers, as they have for years, denied the gay puppet rumors, saying "Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves. Even though the Sesame Street Muppets ... possess many human traits and characteristics, they have no sexual orientation." If you're still unsure, get some background at the Jim Henson exhibit at the Museum of Moving Image.

Do they really need a wedding?! They already act like an old married couple: http://bit.ly/qwIJYQ. A wedding won't change nothing!

  • If Sesame Street wants a gay marriage arc, and I believe it's about damned time, fine, But use human characters, Bert and Ernie were originally the metaphor for Frank Oz and Jim Henson, two very different, but straight men. I know that gay men adopted them as icons but that is a misreading of the creator's intent.

bring back archie bunker!! hero of the people!

  • and actually i agree with the above comment. Not just through the street, but through parents kids should learn, and i think something so pure in not usually sturring up political problems, sesame street should just stay out of it. I have nothing worng against gay marriage but i beleive sesame street will have a new name bringing up a topic such as thiss

  • I am completely fine with gay marriage and lifestyle and i think it is awesome that Rod and Ricky from avenue Q got married but, I think that making Ernie and Bert a Gay couple will actually decrease the amount of viewers on sesame street due to those who don't agree with gay marriage and lifestyle. If sesame workshop wants to expose Gay marriage to children, why not create a couple of characters to do so, instead of using a friendship of Frank Oz and Jim Henson. This would be great to adress to kids in my opinion but not through Bert and Ernie.

  • Very inappropriate to use 'Bert & Ernie' to push sexuality down children's throats. Those type of people are indeed immature. Sexuality, religion, Mets/Yankees; let parents teach their own children about these things.

A young person I watched grow up is about to get married to another man.

I remember how fascinated he was with Bert and Ernie and Ren and Stimpy growing up.

And I think its a beautiful thing.

If Bert and Ernie arn't allowed to develop a plausible explanation for all those shared bath's Sleeping Beauty is nothing but a chick with a narcoleptic fetish.

  • imadick

    aren't they common-law gay-married now?

  • canofpeas

What special interest could be so narcissistic to think fundamentally insentient objects mirror their sexual preference?  Never mind...

  • hippies_hate_water

leave bert and ernie alone. they are not gay, so don't make them gay. if you make them gay, aren't you supporting the position that gay can be learned or made?

and, there are enough friggin homos walking around without making more.

too many queers as it is. how bout making some of them NOT gay?

  • I Don't See One Thing Wrong With It. Fuck Anyone Who Thinks Otherwise. You're Just Like The Whites Who Want The Blacks At The Back Of The Bus. Just Like The Men Who Want Women In The Kitchen. And Now You're The Brain Dead No Nothings That Want Gays Out Of The Muppet Realm. Fuck Off, Because Its As Easy As 1-2-3. Children Need Guidance To Understand Its Not Ok To Pee On Your Fellow Day Care Buddy, Not Ok To Kick Scream And Be A Little Bitch When You Don't Get Your Way, Understand That There Are Different People In This World And That Each One Needs To Be Recognized And Respected. Nothing Wrong At All, In The Least, Whatsoever That It Starts On The Ground Breaking Children Show That Is Sesame Street. So Fuck Off People Its As Easy As A-B-C.

that must take so fucking long to type

  • So bizarre that you capitalize the first letter of every word, you must be ill.

  • Fuck that, go make new gay puppets, why bring sex and sexuality to Sesame Street? Fucks, you fucks!

  • angry_pickle

Because some adults are obsessed with sex and think children should be too.

  • aloveston

Let's face it: Bert & Ernie are lovers.  And that's wonderful.

But gays now have the right NOT to get married as much as they have the right TO get married.  Let these two practice that first one.

  • Roger_the_Shrubber

This episode of sesame street is brought to you by the letters "K" and "Y" and jelly.

  • Guest

...and Plushies want the honeymoon sex tape.

  • sketto

This question distracts from the much more important issue that is still unanswered. That is, are they called Ernie & Bert or Bert & Ernie?

  • Peanut_Butter

I think it's always been Bert & Ernie, never heard it the other way around.
