Photos: Saturday's Wild Lines To See Alexander McQueen At The Met

This is the second-to-last day of the Metropolitan Museum's record-breaking Alexander McQueen show, Savage Beauty. If there was a frenzy yesterday, with dozens already outside the museum by 7:45 a.m., well, then today things are at fever pitch, because a huge line had formed outside the Met by 7:30 a.m. You snooze, you lose!

As one person Tweeted, "There is a 2 hr. line outside to get to a 2 hr. line inside to get to a 2 hr. line for the exhibit." But visitors who manage to make it through the wait say the show, which is a retrospective of the late designer's intricately tailored and wildly imaginative work, is well worth it. Just look at this dress made from duck feathers!

We hear that the Metropolitan Museum of Art had closed some galleries in order to pull security guards to help manage the McQueen crowds. Also, the museum had been allowing members, as well as people who sign up for memberships while in line (yesterday morning, Met Museum staffers were offering memberships to line-waiters), to cut the line. However, yesterday's crowds surged, forcing the Met to stop the linecutting, which pissed off some members, like a new mother who left her three-month-old baby for the first time—she told DNAinfo, "Had I known there was no membership line I would have arranged my childcare accordingly."

The Met now has a message on its website: "Due to extremely high attendance, we regret that we are no longer able to offer Members priority access to Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty. Please note that Memberships are not refundable." Or as another person Tweeted, "Sorry, but if you waited til the last minute to see McQueen at The Met and you're complaining about the line..."

The museum is open until midnight tonight and tomorrow night.

The Met should've had a timed tickets system put in place for this exhibition. (Like MoMA has done when there's a hugely popular show.) Poor judgment call on somebody's part.
  • Wonkiwoo
MoMA charges extra for some special exhibits, and had a static admission price. The Met doesn't. A timed ticket system means a set price for admission (not "suggested"), and is strongly discouraged since operation costs are partially provided by the city. Timed tickets were proposed for the Big Bambu exhibit last year, but rejected for this reason.

There is so many great activities in NY but they are usually too crowded to be enjoyable. Similar to the tragedy of the commons.

too bad we don't see lines like this on election day...
  • I can't believe the Met is closing this - can't they expend for another few month?  They must be raking in the cash for this.
  • CityFace
As per McQueen's will, all these items are to be destroyed Sept 1.  They will never be seen again.
  • Lots of the clothes are Daphne Guinness' private collection.
  • CityFace
That'll cause quite the legal conundrum then.
  • junkrabbit
Mind posting a link to his will? Couldn't read anything while in the show, too crowded.

I'm trying to start a rumor here, facts aren't going to help any.
  • LazyNanny
Yea exactly. Memo to the dim witted museum management: EXTEND THE DATE.
  • wilsonbilson
There is another exhibit scheduled to be installed in those galleries. Exhibitions pull artwork from all over the world, and are often organized years in advance. Also, the costumes in the exhibit are on loan to the museum. I'm sure the museum would love to extend it till January, but that would be impossible. It's been extended for as long as it could have been.
The "dim witted" museum management has already extended hours, and is keeping the museum open till midnight, which will surely cost a ton in overtime and security.
  • AndySydor
They're charging 50$ to people going in during the extended hours. This is a hugely profitable show for the Met. And why are you whining about someone getting overtime?
  • wilsonbilson
The 50$ tickets were only for Monday viewings. This weekend the show is open till midnight, no special ticket is needed besides admission.
And I'm all for overtime! It's great! The point I was making was it's not such an easy thing to simply extend a show because is is wildly popular. Overtime for everyone!
  • AndySydor
Sorry. I'm a little twitchy after some many attacks on working stiffs. (The Tea Party seems to think we're supposed to work for free.) I should not have assumed you were of that ilk.
  • birdtird
Come on, Steve McQueen wasn't worth all of this
  • thePinkSuperhero
SO glad I went last weekend!  I waited inside-only for 2.5 hours.  It was worth it.

6 hours total wait? Really? That's a lot of stupid fucking people with too much time on their hands.
  • nice job
    Shut up
  • zombie_cakes
Pissed off you sat in that line yourself, eh?
  • nice job
Pissed off that other people are excited to look at art that's only available for a limited time? Go write a poem about it.

Yes, a much better way to spend your Saturday is sitting at a computer and making snarky comments on Gothamist. Like us!

I'm just waiting for my laundry to finish, then I'm going hiking.
