A motorcyclist traveling northbound on the West Side Highway was knocked off his vehicle by an SUV and then struck and killed by another driver who was arrested at the scene for DWI. The condition of a second passenger on the motorcycle is unknown.

According to the NYPD, the slain 22-year-old Hispanic man stopped his motorcycle at a red light around 6 a.m. at 12th Ave. & 46th St., and was hit by a white Honda SUV with New Jersey plates as the light turned green. Another car then fatally struck the man in the road. Police are still attempting to locate the white Honda SUV that fled the scene. Earlier this year during Fleet Week a Marine was killed in a hit and run a few blocks north on the West Side Highway at 49th street, and the corridor has seen its share of fatal accidents.

I realize the default position here is to blame the heaviest vehicle first: but we really don't know much from this post. Were all the vehicles on 12th Ave? Were all traveling the same direction?

    Damn bike lanes.

  • Guest

    you mean car lanes...

  • mistermarkdavis

Yeah until all these scofflaw motorists follow the laws and stop at red lights we shouldn't let them have all these car lanes.

  • Emmily_Litella

Certainly didn't mean to hit the biker, just 'didn't see him'.  I hate being the only one waiting for a light to change for this very reason.  Always make sure your headrest is raised in case some vision disabled driver comes up behind you and fails to stop.

The next time I see a radar trap on the West Side highway will be the first, and I ride along it almost every day.

And yes, I know there are a handful of red light cameras.

  • mistermarkdavis

I thought NYC was waiting on Albany to set up red light.  Red light cameras decrease running red lights and decrease traffic fatalities.  This man might still be alive if New York had red light cameras.

  • but red-light cameras piss off people who have a habit of running red lights, of which there are many, and they vote... :(

    DUI at 6am?  classy.

  • Dunce_Party

    Driving in Manhattan? Sophisticated.

  • Please we need more straight roads which encourage speeding.

lets get rid of the sky too so there are no more airplane accidents.

  • mistermarkdavis

Flight regulations are strongly enforced and they have far far fewer crashes and fatalities.

  • felixthecat

Sky? Planes make more sense. Get rid of plans if that is the case.

  • TheRealCannibal

no, what about helicopters?  and dangerous birds?  The sky needs to go.  Its irresponsible to have it up there.

  • Gwinny

Didn't the SUV hit him after being stopped at a red light?

  • mistermarkdavis

Gwinny you get points for actually reading the article.  Bonus points for thinking too.

  • YES. Can't stop in time is part two, when part one is going too fast.

  • xToddrick

I don't believe the article said it was because the driver couldn't stop.  If the light just turned green then I would think both vehicles were stopped at the light and the SUV driver hit him when he took off because the light turned green.
