Shel Silverstein, who died in 1999 and has a posthumous book coming out in September entitled Every Thing On It, is getting a Central Park celebration this weekend. The author, mostly known for his children's books, also worked Off Broadway, wrote columns for Playboy, and even wrote Johnny Cash's "A Boy Named Sue"! In fact, here is he talking to his pal, the Man in Black:

This Saturday Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, Martha Wainwright, Darrell Hammond and more will pay tribute to Silverstein at SummerStage. You can join in on the Shelebration for free—more details here.

We should celebrate Shel Silverstein more often.

Hugh Hefner said Shel made the most of his visits to the Playboy Mansion back in the day...

Wow, their two voices couldn't be any more different.  Shel is very screechy compared to Johnny's deep and smooth voice.

  • LOVED shel silvestein's poems and recorded poems on tape as a kid, yet i was TERRIFIED of his photos on sleeves on the back of the books.  such a scary looking man!  this video of him in action backs up my decision to stuff the sleeves of my books into the trash when i was ten years old.

Haha, I remember being a bit scared of his photo on the back of Where The Sidewalk Ends.
