Video: Camera-Shy Long Island Cop Arrests News Cameraman

080111cop.jpg It never ends: an accredited freelance news cameraman was arrested by a Long Island police sergeant Friday evening after he refused to stop videotaping an arrest in Bohemia. Here's video of the incident, which the cameraman, Phil Datz, uploaded to YouTube after he was released from custody. As you can see, the video appears to show a hot-headed (and bald-headed) cop bullying a member of the press without any reasonable explanation:

Datz says he was standing on public property far from the police activity, and in the video you can see other bystanders standing hear him and witnessing the scene without being ordered to leave. Nevertheless, Datz was charged with misdemeanor obstruction of governmental administration. Before the arrest, you can hear the unidentified officer yell at him, "I’ve been doing this for 30 years and there’s nothing you can hold over my head or anyone out there. Go away."

Newsday reports that officers were at the scene responding to a high-speed chase after two suspects hit an unmarked police car. In addition to Datz, two men were arrested on drug and other charges related to the chase. The Suffolk County Police Department issued a statement saying, "The department is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the arrest of Mr. Datz." [Via Poynter]

It happens all the time, they think they are above the law. And they do what they want and lie all the time. It is disgusting and he should be fired, also the press should put this in every paper and on the front page because this is going on all the time all over the place.

  • But thankfully, there are also respectful and polite police officers out there enforcing the law everyday just like this one. God Bless America http://www.ebaumsworld.com/vid...

  • Doing the job for 30 years and nobody can hold anything over him, he says. He is invincible and will get the last laugh when he retires from the force from his $150,000 job with a full pension and benies paid for by the public that he despises with his condescending, demeaning, overzealous and disrespectful treatment of them. He is a bully with a badge and a superiority complex and should be kicked off the force. But he won't be and he knows it. Instead he will be rewarded with a  pension the rest of us losers can only dream about.

  • Investigate-NWO-globalists

This bald-headed bastard has no right to make anyone stop videoing!!!

  • Sgt.

  • You hear that? That's the sound of the first amendment being ripped to shreds.

And btw, recording police is actually illegal in maryland, Massachusetts and Illinois. Freaking bullshit.

  • Throw away 30 years on the job over an accedited Newsman just doing his job. Some stupid just can't be fixed.

  • jaycjay

Heh. He didn't throw away 30 years on the job. Nothing at all will happen to the cop. The department is going to hold "refresher courses" on interacting with the press, and this matter will be closed.

  • Spirit of 76

Too bad. This prick deserves to be busted to officer and sent on a foot beat for the rest of his misbegotten career.

  • whitecastlerock

I've been doing this for 30 years. Exactly what is that? Being a fucking bully with a badge? ACAB...

  • robotjuiced

Pigs are constantly abusing their power.

  • jaycjay

It's worth keeping this in mind for whenever someone suggests that NYPD performance or courtesy would be better if the department could be more selective and they were paid as much as the suburban cops are.

    Makes no difference.

  • People really suggest that? Cops are cops, no matter where you go. There are always plenty of good ones, but also plenty of guys who are attracted to the force specifically because it gives them a feeling of power.

  • Sinchy

If there was an active investigation going on why was that cop wasting time with the camera man?

  • Guest

wow that pig's head is HUUGE....

    figuratively and literally

  • Roger_the_Shrubber

Whether or not the cameraman was a member of the press or not is irrelevant. Anybody should be able to photograph in public.

Every day the government finds new ways to observe and record you while they shield themselves from scrutiny.

I don't think this is a coincidence that this type of incident is happening so frequently.

  • ktinnyc

Let me interpret what the cop is saying. "Turn off your camera because we don't want any hard evidence when we give this guy a good beating for resisting arrest."

  • m_c_nyc

I am wonder how many people get arrested for nothing?
It should be a law that every policeman has active camera at all times. They are abusing power way too often.

  • Dead Himmler

How about lets start with every policeman having an education.

  • John Clary

You mean an "education" from what the Repugs have done to the school systems?
