5-Year-Old Shot In The Bronx

2011_05_bxdeli.jpg A 5-year-old boy accompanying his mother to the deli was shot in the leg in the Bronx. The pair, who just bought milk, were walking on Allerton Avenue at 10 p.m. and apparently got caught in gang crossfire.

A witness told the Post, "Two groups... kids with guns, have been going at it for a week... And what happens? A 5-year-old gets shot." According to the witness, "one of the factions was kids from the neighborhood, the other from the Pelham Parkway Houses."

The cops say that the boy, who is in serious but stable condition at Jacobi Medical Center, was not the target. There have been no arrests, but the investigation is continuing.

They've been going at it a week? You'd think the cops would step up eventually.

    Get well soon, little guy.

Why don't the actual gang members ever get shot?  Are they firing warning shots deliberately to miss other gang members, only to mostly hit bystanders?

    A) They're terrible shots
    B) They're holding the guns sideways and have no reference for aiming
    C) They're actually cowards and don't really want to hurt anyone
    D) All of the above

A and B are particularly true I think. I was held up at gunpoint by a group of teenagers a couple years ago, and one of them had a type of gun I had very recently learned to shoot with family Idaho (ah, hillbilly life), and let me tell you, if he hadn't been a foot away from me, I wouldn't have been that scared. He had defnitely never actually fired that gun before, and certainly couldn't have hit a target, even a standing target, more than 10 feet away.
