Map: If The World Lived Like New Yorkers We'd All Fit In Texas

Maps via Per Square Mile

Here's a pretty cut and dry and terrifying graphic to take in. This rendering shows "how much space the world’s population of 6.9 billion would need if it were as dense as certain cities." So if everyone lived like New Yorkers, the entire population could fit into Texas! Comparatively, if we lived like Parisians (see map below), we'd all be able to fit into 128,000 square miles (or Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi). Let's just not compare living space square-footage, okay?

  • But if everyone REALLY lived like New Yorkers (ate, bought, and discarded things as New Yorkers do) we'd probably need a bigger planet...

You would think that from seeing the situation with street food, but New Yorkers actually generate less garbage than average. (no Walmarts in the city might have something to do with that)

Does this squash the notion of urban sprawl?
  • Kevin_Kramers
With the pop density of Manila, the world pop would fit in Missouri with 7k sq miles to spare... enough land for 786 million more inhabitants...

What if all my exes live in Texas?
  • A city with 6.9 billion people the size of Texas. What is that smell?

Oh, sorry - that's me, dear.
I had Thai for lunch and Indian for dinner.
  • We here in NYC live all on top of each other so we don't HAVE to live in Texas. Texas is scary.
  • They're only using Texas as a measurement of size, not the physical location everyone would move to.

Thank you, please don your humor hat.

The world would be filled with a lot more schizos: http://www.nytimes.com/1992/07...

Would be pretty terrifying to live in Texas.

    Don't mass with Texas.

Not quite sure I'm ready for the Blade Runner-like cityscape that would create. But I'll take the flying cars and pleasure model Nexus 6's.

    No more free range people.

Imagine how angry and extra gun-brandishing Texans would be if they had to live like New Yorkers.
  • shampoomohawk
That's 1011 sqft per person.  Really, not bad.  Hell, with the roomates and all, I only have a couple hundred all to myself as it is anyways.  Don't panic, everyone.  I think it works out that Austin would be about where Williamsburg is.

    what??

Can we get one of these for Tokyo?
  • crusher153
if they did one for tokyo the worlds population would fit in coney island
  • Pashri Diaz
We would all fit in a space the size of Massachusetts.
  • jisnotused
    Hong Kong. End of story.

    Manila.

The one for SF is close (Tokyo's official density is lower due to some uninhabited areas).
  • Rocknrope
Seriously, it's got to be worse in Tokyo, I've seen the way people live there, and if I had to do it I'd go batshit insane.
  • In Brooklyn, I can afford 500 square feet. In Tokyo, it was a 1,000 square foot duplex. Don't believe that "everyone" lives in a one-room apartment. Just like anywhere, there is a mix of lifestyles there too. And it's not just for the "gaijin" (foreigners).
  • robingee
Have you seen videos of those tiny apartments with room for a mattress and a TV and then there's the mini galley kitchen and that's it?  Yikes.
  • imadick
you're thinking of robot arms. that's futurama.
  • robingee
But the closet at the Robot Arms is HUGE.
