Livery Cab Strikes Man And Baby, Driver Flees Scene On Foot

A livery cab that was struck by a silver Hyundai pinned a father and his infant child against a fence before its driver fled the scene on foot. The Hyundai slammed into the livery cab yesterday around 2 p.m. on Eastern Parkway in Bed-Stuy, causing the livery driver to lose control of his vehicle as it careened over the curb and into the 27-year-old man and his baby who happened to be standing next to the Arbelo Mini Market.

The child's mother was inside the market getting something to drink, and a witness told the Post that she "hysterically" screamed, "My baby! My baby!" after exiting the store and seeing her kid's mangled stroller.

Miraculously a family member tells the paper that the baby is "fine," while it's father suffered serious but not life-threatening leg injuries that required surgery at Kings County Hospital. A representative from police HQ informed us that no charges have been filed in the incident, but that it's still under investigation. The livery car left at the scene is one of Ivory Carting Corp's fleet, and it's likely that they'll be able to determine the driver who fled.

    That's not Bed-Stuy

  • TheRealCannibal

I love the stories when the babies are unharmed.

  • Just to hypothesize, the driver might have feared retaliation by an angry crowd.

  • guy who ran must be guilty of something, they will find out soon enough.

  • moocow

Why would he run? This guy doesn't follow the news much. He could have killed them, run, come back and he still wouldn't in trouble.
One doesn't even have to read the details to know that "No criminality" would be suspected.

Exactly! The surest way for a driver to be let off the hook after killing or injuring someone is to stay at the scene and simply say, "I didn't see them!" or "I lost control of my car!"  Cops will let you walk with, maybe, a tiny fine.

If you want to murder someone in NYC and get away with it, don't use a gun.  Use a car.

A more thorough list of acceptable explanations for running over someone with your automobile in NYC includes:

    "I did not see/hear/feel anything."
    "The brake did not work."
    "The accelerator was stuck."

    That generally covers everything!

    "they had headphones on"

  • edgie168

Yes but apparently in THIS particular case.. he really isn't at fault. But keep harping on about what you're harping on about, though.

We at Gothamist SURELY haven't read similar comments enough.

And yet there are people who are against traffic calming on Eastern Parkway.

Livery cab strikes man with baby ... is a baby considered a deadly weapon? How exactly does a cab wield a baby?

  • TheRealCannibal

    photoshop please.

  • Christopher_Robbins

Fair enough, we changed the headline.

  • asakasan

    Thanks :-D

  • slow the fuck down NYC drivers

  • pillow_case

The cab was obviously not at fault here so why would the cab driver flee his registered car?

  • mte... What's up with the Hyundai driver? What made him hit the cabbie?
