GOP Willing To Screw Entire Universe For Rich People

Obama and Boehner meet today in the Cabinet Room (AP)

Are you a veteran, receiving Social Security, a government contractor, or of one of the recipients of the 70 million checks the federal government mails out every month? Your payments may be drastically affected (along with the American economy) next month if the debt-ceiling limit isn't raised in 10 days.

Yesterday, bleating Tea Party pawn and House majority leader John Boehner walked away from last-minute negotiations with President Obama because he was unable to agree to closing tax loopholes for the wealthy amounting to $1.2 trillion dollars. In a statement [pdf], Boehner said, "In the end, we couldn't connect. Not because of different personalities, but because of different visions for our country." Presumably the GOP's "vision" of the country only includes its wealthiest citizens.

President Obama, who agreed to a staggering amount of concessions in hopes of cutting a deal and preventing the shock of the US's default to the global economy, pointedly noted in a press conference, "One of the questions that the Republican Party is going to have to ask itself is can they say yes to anything?" Of course, Barry, they say "yes" to corporations and wealthy donors all the time.

The President called for Boehner, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Mitch McConnell to meet him in his office today because, "We have run out of time…they are going to have to explain to me how it is that we are going to avoid default," but all that produced was more posturing. A recent poll showed that 80% of people were angry or dissatisfied with Washington in general, and 63% of voters noted that they were going to look for "someone else" other than their current representative. That's if we're not all burning tires for warmth and overhunting the dwindling squirrel population in a post-apocalyptic hellscape instead of electing representatives in 2012, solely because GE shouldn't have to pay any taxes.

Love the way Republicans play with language. Greedy bastards who game the system and use our TARP money to give themselves huge bonuses are "job providers", while Social Security and Medicare, paid for by decades of recepients' contributions (along with three different types of Medicare fees totaling hundreds of dollars a month) is an "entitlement."

There is a solution to this. Take away the extravagant medical and retirement plans of Congressmen and give them regular private health insurance plans, Social Security and Medicare like the rest of us. Watch how quick they switch from "Fuck the People!" to "We the People."

How about making the forty eight percent of Americans who pay NOTHING kick in to the kitty?

  • whosonfirst123

0 percent of Americans pay "nothing."

  • robingee

Corporations like GE pay nothing and actually get money back. I read it in Forbes, that left-wing rag.

  • BottomlessChips

You don't try and get the most deductions and money back each year when you file?

Immelt is buddy buddy with Obama. GE employees were donors to many of the Republicans (and Dems) in 2004 when the loopholes were opened.

Keep trying to blame one side though. Meanwhile the politicians keep expanding government, taking donations, and making tax code more complex.

  • robingee

Well I get money back when I pay too much, not when I pay NOTHING. And who's blaming one side? Big corporations should pay their share. I don't think Democrats are pious souls with halos who never take donations from big oil or health insurance companies. Hillary did, and she was supposed to be fighting them.

  • BottomlessChips

    Good points. I agree.

    GOP plan:
    1 Worry about GOP
2 After that, worry about the rich
3 Worry about everyone else never

And the golden rule, destroy Obama presidency at any expense.

How about ending the limit on taxable earnings for Social Security? It is now at $106,800. There are individuals that hit that figure in January. Change the law and make every dollar of income taxable for Social Security and a lot of sins will be covered The people in those brackets don't pay their fair share in any case and I'll bet almost all of them take that monthly check when they reach 62 .
