A passenger of the SUV that was reportedly going 112 mph before careening off the FDR at E. 23rd street in Kips Bay early Saturday morning has had a leg amputated, and the driver, 38-year-old Eric Bryant lost an ear. Miraculously, all 8 people involved survived, including the 23-year-old cabbie, Atif Raza, whose car broke the Land Rover's fall. "It felt like an earthquake," Raza tells the Post, "I'm happy to be alive. I'm getting a second chance…I'm really going to be going to the mosque now."

The NYPD told us again today that no charges have been filed against any of the parties involved, despite reports that Bryant was speeding. He has stated to authorities that another car cut the SUV off, causing him to swerve and roll off the elevated highway. A nearby driver at the scene of the accident told NY1, "You could actually hear the screaming, once the — it was like a movie, special effects type of thing. That car hit that cab and then it was like a puff of smoke, an explosion. I was actually stunned."

Say what you want about hipsters, but they've never run off the FDR at 112 mph and landed on a cab.

""I'm happy to be alive. I'm getting a second chance… I'm really going to be going to [a place of worship] now."

    How scientific! How rational!

Do drivers get charged for anything? Ever?

"I'm getting a second chance…I'm really going to be going to the mosque now."
He's already planning to squander that second chance.

    Haha
The mooslime cabbie is going to church now?
    Dude!
    Get a life!
Life is short and even shorter when we step into a car Ane especially when there are maniac driink drivers out there.
Let's hope this douche gets put away
Why don't the state make a law that folks who drive drunk should have a Alcohol sensor on gheir ignition?
I think it should be standard actually for all car purchase espdislly for those under 30 years old The church ain't Gonna help you. Thinking like that is pure ignorance. Most folks who follow religions are poor and ignorant
So, raza. You lucky ignoramus you just were in the wrong place at the wrong time

    What's a mooslime?

    I liked "espdislly" myself.

And it would also be a good idea for you to wait at least a few hours before driving to allow plenty of time for the effects to wear off.

Having a drivers license in NYC is like having a license to kill.

Edit to add, in some cases you don't even need a valid license. Just a car will do.

  • outrageous that no charges have been filed.  112mph?  The so-called cut-off was probably a normal lane change that failed to anticipate a maniac doing 112mph!  Sheer madness

Unless they witness the driver do it or have credible witnesses, their hands are tied.

  • the driver, 38-year-old Eric Bryant lost an ear

Damn, I hope Eric has good eyesight.  He'd have a hell of a time keeping glasses from falling off.

Some of the victims relatives of past accidents (the girl on scooter killed by gov employee running a red light) should get together and push for a bill in New York in which if you kill anyone with your vehicle while in violation of any traffic law it's an automatic manslaughter charge. This is beyond ridiculous. If you want to kill someone in New York just do it with your vehicle and you'll get off free as a bird.

  • longacre

Nobody was killed in this incident.

  • gothamcity

Yes I understand that but if you've been reading the news you'd see a guy was killed when a truck backed up over him going the wrong way up a one way, you'd also know about the girl on the scooter.

Although no one died in this situation again no charges have been filed. It's like the city is giving drivers the green light to break the law, cause injury or loss of life, and pay no legal consequences.

This is a problem and it's why Gothamist called out the fact that yet again, no charges have been filed.

  • longacre

He'll be sued into oblivion. His life won't be fun.

  • Peanut_Butter

Being sued only means anything to conscientious, responsible people, ie., won't mean shit to the SUV driver.

  • bggb

I'd rather have actual effective laws in place rather than rely on litigation for people to get any 'justice' (or money?)
