A Bronx woman is accused of abandoning her pit bull to starve to death after she was evicted from her apartment. Cherika Alvarez, 30, is on trial for leaving behind 18-month-old pup Alize after she was evicted from her apartment in mid-November 2009. The dog was found weeks later with two razorblades, ketchup packs, sharp pieces of wood and garbage in her stomach. Alize's body was so badly decomposed that officials "had to scrape her off the floor," Alvarez tearfully testified.

Officers from the ASPCA found the remains of the dog in the Belmont basement apartment in January 2010—according to doctors, the puppy had no body fat, was found amid a trail of bloody feces and had suffered four to six weeks of "complete starvation." Alvarez claims that she had arranged for a neighbor, whom she didn't know "from a hole in the wall," to pick up the dog, which they apparently never did. "This is what happened when I trusted someone for the first time in my life and gave him the benefit of the doubt," she said in court.

The single mother said she had left water in the bath tub for the dog, but admitted that she was negligent in not checking to make sure the dog had been picked up: "Me being irresponsible, I didn't check up on the dog. I'm really sorry." Alvarez is charged with torturing and injuring an animal, and faces up to a $1,000 fine and a year in jail if found guilty on animal cruelty charges.

So now she's crying after leaving this poor helpless creature to starve to death for six weeks? Crocodile tears, I am sure. If she cared at all about this dog, she would have checked up on him. Or at least left the door open to give him a fighting chance! Who leaves a living creature in a locked apartment like an old piece of furniture that you don't want? She was told the puppy was still barking weeks after she left him and yet she did nothing. What a heartless, worthless excuse for a human being. I hope she gets the worst punishment possible and if it was up to me, I'd force her to eat razor blades and wood chips for six weeks. The neighbors might have called the ASPCA or done something... I would have broken down the damned door if I knew a starving dog was trapped inside.

Unfortunately, not an unusual occurrence. Go to any college town and you'll find the incidence of abandoned pets spikes in May when the school year is finished and the kids head for home.

Jail and fine her. What she did is inexcusable, and she is straight up lying. Send a message out there to all of the animal abusers, that this kind of abuse will not be tolerated by our society. Wonder how she takes care of her child? Probably another piece of trash in the works. Jail her and give her kid to the state to find a more suitable home. I wish it were reasonable to punish certain people with the crime that they committed. Someone should starve her for 4-6 weeks. What's messed up, is a dog can't fend for itself, while a person can, which is like leaving a baby to fend for itself. Most people do not value dogs as much as humans, but to leave and forget about the dog is ridiculous. We have to share our planet with monsters like this, when we need to get rid of them altogether. I say if people are a menace to society, and by the age of thirty she cannot get it together, than we should humanly exterminate people to make the world a better place. I hope she is punished to the max and doesn't get to raise anything that has a heartbeat ever again. She's not sorry for the dog. She's sorry because she doesn't want to rot in jail. When people treat animals a certain way, it is the tip of the iceberg on how they treat humans.

Hey, at least she seems to be remorseful for about it. That's a refreshing change.

She is only remorseful because she got caught, otherwise she couldn't give a shit.

"This is what happened when I trusted someone for the first time in my life and gave him the benefit of the doubt,"

She's a single mom - something tells me that this isn't the first time she trusted someone and gave him the benefit of the doubt.

    Good one...

  • Gwinny

She should face additional charges for that outfit, that hair, and the fact that she apparently still uses MySpace.

More seriously, I can only wonder how well she is taking care of her kid(s) if this is what she did to this poor animal.

  • ONE_LESS_FIXED_GEAR

Last she knew, she left a post-it on the door of some neighbor she doesn't know from a hole in the wall to pick up her kid.

Someone ought to check it out...
