Rumormongering: Is Steak 'n Shake Coming To New York?

july12steaknshake.jpg

Could the dreams of thousands of transplanted Midwesterners finally be coming true? It appears that beloved Illinois-based burger chain Steak n' Shake, which prides itself on thin, crispy "steakburgers" and hand-dipped milkshakes, is indeed coming to New York, at least according to this job posting on Monster.com.

It's too early to tell where or when the New York location will open up, but the 10019 zip code on the listing implies that it will land somewhere near Midtown West or Hell's Kitchen. Steak 'n Shake isn't the first Midwestern chain to come our way recently—Chicago-based sandwich shop Potbelly's is on its way, too. We don't know how Steak 'n Shake will compete with hometown favorite Shake Shack, but we plan to launch a very thorough side-by-side taste test.

  • But what about In-N-Out?

  • NOT A FAN! I went to college out in the MidWest. They sell expensive, o.k. food. Pretty sure it'll appeal to the late drunk crowd.

  • Peanut_Butter

Those fries don't even look appetizing.

  • Hey how about a little proof reading before you post these things? It's bad enough the article is idiotic the headline doesn't have to be too.

  • jaycjay

Is there is something wrong with the headline?

  • Yes, there is.

  • Bye bye Shake Shack. Steak burgers > overpriced hype.

  • maltexx

Used to love steak n' shake in college, although I never could tell if the Frisco melt at 2am was delicious or was making me sick... either way, I look forward to it serving me nostalgia along with junk food.

  • a) Comparing Steak 'n' Shake to Shake Shack is ridiculous. The latter is so much better than the former, it's laughable to even imagine that there'd be competition between the two.

    b) That said, I grew up in Florida (which also has Steak 'n Shakes), and I'm definitely still white trash enough to be seriously excited about this possibility. And I've lived in NY for over a decade.

  • Have any of you idiots actually had a steak n shake burger recently? They're amazing. I love the harsh judgements and certainty that comes from folks who have never even had steak n shake. Or from people who remember stopping in there when they were 12. What other kind of food did you hate when you were 12? I hated onions and tomatoes when I was 12. I was a fucking moron when I was 12! Like you are now!

Shake Shack will eat Steak and Shake alive...

  • GentleGiant

Steak 'n Shake and Shake Shack largely serve two completely different demographics.  They won't be in competition with each other.  That we are discussing both at the same time is mostly due to the ignorance of Eater and Gothamist.

  • TheOtherBob

Agreed.  The only real similarity between them is the word "shake" -- Steak n Shake is a far more similar to a diner in concept, and a crappy McDonald's in execution.  They both serve shakes, sure, but...so does Burger King.

Yesterday I was missing Steak & Shake and wondering why there were none in New York. This makes me happy.

  • Roger_the_Shrubber

Anything that annoys the food fascists is fine by me.

  • pierrotfakeaire

Nice, Gothamist. "...10019 AREA CODE". Yeah, last I checked that was called a zip code. Do your writers speak English, or is it just your Liberal Asshole-ism rearing its dumbass head?

  • Roger_the_Shrubber

Knock it off. Calling people on this site liberals is my job.

  • Amber

    Chili Mac!!

  • Representing the Lou! I'll be there you nasty ho's.

Next let's get a Blueberry Hill and a Vintage Vinyl... and in East New York. The OZ (East). I dare you to step.

  • da_phonz

I'd rather have the Hi-Pointe reincarnated here.
