Fatty Foods Will Get You Stoned And Craving More Fatty Foods

Hey man, you know where I can get some fatty food around here? (Flickr wendelling)

Fatty foods can make you feel stoned, and then, just like actually being stoned, can give you the munchies, according to a new study being released this week. It's a vicious cycle that doesn't end until the police come pry your tumescent ass off of the toilet seat with a crowbar—so take heed.

Apparently, fatty foods trigger the body to produce "a natural feel-good chemical" called endocannabinoids, which produces effects similar to pot. That part sounds pretty alright—getting stoned off of French fries?!—but the catch is that these endocannabinoids will then drive you to pig out even more. At least when you smoke pot, the "getting high" part won't get you fat. Endocannabinoids were discovered when scientists learned that the human body can actually create its own cannabinoids, which are tiny little molecules that reduce pain and anxiety. For what it's worth, you can also trigger your endocannabinoids by exercising, which isn't as much fun as eating Cheeze Doodles.

This study seems to directly contradict a study last year which stated that overeating fatty foods produced effects similar to cocaine addition, which, last we checked, makes you not want to eat.

"...found that chemicals called "endocannabinoids" produce a drug-like feeling that can drive you to gorge on fatty foods such as chips and fries. In the study, researchers noted that sugary or high-protein foods did not have this effect..."

This methodology seems suspect.  Chips and fries are not just fatty, they are starchy and have a similar impact on blood sugar as "sugary" foods made with sucrose or fructose.  And many "high-protein" foods, like steak, also contain significant amounts of dietary fat.  I haven't read the whole study, but how is it possible to pinpoint dietary fat as a culprit when researchers didn't control for carbohydrate/sugar?  In addition, this doesn't square with research suggesting that in the absence of sugar, fats create satiety.

It's irresponsible to call a study "suspect" based on a media summary of the study. Media summaries are what should be "suspect".

"...the human body can actually create its own cannabinoids."

i don't smoke much anymore and i haven't in a really long time, but the above is a reason why i advocate almost every adult to smoke at least a little, to subconsciously learn how to produce your own cannabinoids.  with a little self-control, knowing how to produce your own cannabinoids is really fucking precious, especially in such a stressful city like New York.

I never get the munchies while stoned and eating fatty foods never gets me stoned either.  I guess I'm just going to have to go with my gut, instead of "science" on this one.
