NBA To Begin Lockout After Owners, Players Fail To Reach Agreement

Call the NBA and the NFL the Dynamic Dolts, because both leagues are about to be locked out. The NBA will join the lockout party today, as NBA player union representative Billy Hunter stated that the owners will lock out the players tonight, officially putting next season in jeopardy.

NBA owners and players met for three hours in Manhattan today, but still could not hammer out details of a new collective bargaining agreement. Alan Hahn, the Knicks' beat writer for Newsday, tweeted that additional talks are scheduled in about two weeks, so at least the two sides are still communicating.

The talks have stalled over almost every issue there is, from a hard salary cap to revenue sharing. Owners are saying that multiple teams are losing money and that players should take salary cuts, while players are insisting that those cuts shouldn't be anywhere near as much as the league is proposing (somewhere in the area of 38 percent reduction).

This isn't the first time the NBA has locked out. The last time was in 1998, and that work stoppage ended up costing the league many games, culminating in a 50 game regular season that didn't start until February. In an additional bitter twist, that season was also the last time the Knicks made the NBA Finals, losing to the San Antonio Spurs in five games.

I never understood why these negotiations aren't around-the-clock. Why wait two weeks?
