Woman Loses Arm After Being Hit By F Train

An unidentified woman's right arm and left hand were partially severed after she fell on the tracks and was hit by southbound F train at the Second Ave/Houston St stop earlier today. The incident occurred around 11:30 this morning and suspended all F train service between Essex Street and Continental for nearly an hour.

It's unclear as to whether the woman fell from the platform or jumped, but the Post reports that "early indications point to a suicide attempt." Passengers said they saw her jump as the train pulled in, and one witness said she "looked like she was in shock" and was "totally covered" in blood. She is currently in critical condition at Bellevue Hospital. It's not the first incident of this nature to have occurred along this subway line, which has been described as "the city's most troubled."

some people just want the attention

splicer that really only works well if someone lives alone or has access to a place where they can handle their exit with privacy which is definitely the best way to go about this. i still think jumping from a bridge has some strong plusses (little chance of hitting someone on your way out as with a building) provided the person does it at night (less chance of getting caught/stopped) and doesn't dawdle. i don't get people who want to jump from something but drag it out. by the time one gets to the edge of a bridge or a building for that matter, one would think they'd given the matter a fair amount of thought...

    I agree
She should have done it a little better if indeed it was a suicide attempt
Like WTF wants to be armeless and depressed?
    That's too much
    Definitely bridge or at home
Just like the recent suicide of the singer /songwriter
Bad as he supposedly was he didn't inconvenience anyone
    Thanksfully
But we should have airtrain like doors where no one can jump
Suicide Should only be tried at home!!

Killing yourself is easier than people think and a lot less painful (although the pain of being hit by a train is probably fleeting). Buy a tank of helium and get a mask like they use for oxygen tanks. Not only will you fall asleep and then suffocate, the helium does not cause you to spasm because it fools your body into thinking it's breathing air. Very peaceful way to go. Have at it, deathwishers.

  • If I were to commit suicide, death by stalling subway car would probably be near the bottom of the list.

  • The trains to commit suicide with are Amtrak or CSX (something with multiple diesel engines.) Both go much faster and have a lot of weight behind them. They'll knock the limbs off of an animal as large as a cow or an elk with ease—you're 100% likely to die from that impact than a slow moving subway car traveling at a maximum speed of 35mph.

And knowing is half the battle!

It's kind of a stretch to call the F line the "most troubled." The two other incidents you're referencing happened in 2009, and they happened in Brooklyn, not Manhattan. The NY Times article linked from the Huffington Post was written just as the MTA was evaluating the F line and planning on making improvements.

  • "Partially severed" is not the same as "losing".  Please correct the headline.  A partial sever means there is a chance to save it and rebuild.

I really don't get why people choose to jump on the subway tracks to kill themselves. From all the articles I've read about it, people rarely die. Now you've traumatized the poor conductor, fucked up the commute of hundreds of people AND you only have one arm. Life sucks a lot more now, doesn't it?

  • FU Boy

Yes.  It does.  Please pull the plug.  please ...

Really a station would seem to the worst place to do it. Unless you choose one where express trains pass through, the train's slowing to a stop by the time it gets to you.

Pro tip: choose open sections of LIRR or Metro-North track, where express trains can be travelling at over 70 mph!

    Please, demonstrate for us.
