J & R Wants A Street Named After Itself

J&R Music and Computer World, the Financial District electronics behemoth that caters to shopper seeking both a washing machine and an iPod, wants the city to co-name the street it sits on on "J & R Way" in an effort to boost the store's flailing sales.

"Six hundred jobs are dependent on this," store spokesman Abe Brown last week told a Community Board 1 committee. "All over the world, people know our name, but they can't associate where it is." The committee rejected J & R's plea, saying it sets a bad precedent—"Before you know it, we'll have Chase Avenue and JPMorgan Way," said one member. Computer companies and the record industry, two of J & R's largest product offerings, have been suffering losses in jobs and sales in recent years.

Brown said he plans to take the request to City Council for approval, though a Council spokesman said they couldn't find a similar example. The store, which has been open since 1971, is on Park Row between Beekman and Ann Sts.

All J&R has to do get a street named after it is to get shot by the NYPD while attempting to run over said NYPD in a car outside of a titty bar on the moring of the wedding to its baby momma.

I'll take J&R over Best Buy any day.

I'm sure that renaming the street will completely make up for their lousy prices and their awful, awful customer service.

Here's how J&R can (maybe) survive: sell off or close everything but the camera business.  If they own those buildings, auction off the development rights: they're sitting on most of a square block of some of the best real estate in Manhattan, and for what? To do a worse job of selling air conditioners than Best Buy, a worse job selling computer than Apple and Dell online, and a much, much worse job of selling music and movies than Amazon and Netflix.  Turn most of the block into condos: nobody will miss getting charged a 500% markup for HDMI cables.

Then, in order to differentiate the camera business from B&H, hire salespeople who are willing to speak to women -- respectfully, even -- and advertise the hell out of that fact.

  • I'm not surprised it isn't called that already.  I kind of think it deserves it for holding down the fort like that over there.

I've hated J&R since they ripped me off 30 years ago, so they can go to hell as far as I'm concerned. Hope the profit on that one return you refused to accept was worth 30 years of no more purchases from me, dummies. No street for you!

  • I'm sure there's an unnamed alley nearby that is in dire need of naming.

    The request is pathetic.

What are "flailing" sales? Typical chump Gothamist writing>

It's the second time Jamie Feldmar misused the word in as many articles. I think he/she deserves a Flail Cat, er, Fail Cat.

But watch: it will be corrected and your comment and mine will be deleted. That's what Feldmar does when a mistake is pointed out.

The City should harness all these naming requests and put them up for rent to the highest bidder. The names don't mean much, an example "The Avenue Of The Americas", that's been 6th Avenue's name since 1945. They've already missed 2 golden opportunities, the first renaming the Triborough Bridge, RFK Bridge and more recently calling the Queensborough Bridge the Ed Koch Bridge. Those namings could have been sold for a fortune to willing companies and put out for a rebid every 10 years. Instead they'll probably increase the Sales Tax.

  • Here's my idea for a name that should keep J&R happy:
Please Stop Buying Your Electronics from Amazon and Newegg Street

Will there be an amazon.com street to bysect J&R blvb?

  • colonelcasey

The could just drape a giant J&R banner over the 10 or so buildings they own along Park Row.  That'll bring in more business than any tiny street sign would.

  • GregoireNYC

I love J&R and I do support their business, but somebody tell them to shut the fuck up. That is an absurd request.

  • The city usually names an "honorary street" after an individual in recognition of cultural or other contributions to society, not simply on money earned or lost. At least, that's the way it's done in Chicago. We don't name streets simply to advertize a business.

  • Possibly the new Yankee Stadium could become J&R Field, after they purchase the naming rights.

That's the way it's done here as well. J&R is crazy. They're probably just making this insane request for free publicity.

Really? No one can find the only electronics store across the street from City Hall, up the block from the Brooklyn Bridge and two blocks away from the World Trade Center?

I think their problems have more to do with their horrible customer service reps than their 'bad, hard to find, entire block of a location.

    Idiots.
