A 6'1, 200-lb former chef at a posh Meatpacking District restaurant was found guilty of felony assault yesterday for "pounding an elderly man like a veal cutlet" during an unprovoked outburst in the West Village last year.
Matthew Redington, a former cook at the posh Jean-Georges Vongerichten restaurant Spice Market, was arrested last October after an altercation at about 1 a.m. on Bleecker St with 71-year-old Joon Ha Yoon. Redington allegedly screamed "Why did you bump into me?" at Yoon before going "berserk" and punching the old man in the face, leaving the elderly man covered in cuts and blood.
Redington will avoid jail time and serve one year of monitoring followed by five years of probation. Apparently, Redington has been in and out of alcohol treatment programs, but still drinks. Manhattan Supreme Court Justice A. Kirke Bartley threatened that Redington must "stay sober or face serious prison time."
