Antelope Burgers, Alligator Sandwiches Debut At The Burger Guru In Williamsburg
For far too long it's been impossible to find a decent antelope burger in north Williamsburg, but now the new restaurant The Burger Guru has finally made the neighborhood a sophisticated dining destination! In addition to its veggie burger and its wide variety of "normal" organic beef burgers, the Berry Street restaurant (which boasts a big back yard) also specializes in antelope burgers, ostrich burgers, bison burgers, elk burgers and lamb burgers. And if that's too tame for you, owner Nick Voulkoudis tells us this weekend there will be gator on the menu.
"I've always liked to try new things, which is why I brought the alligator," Voulkoudis explained. "But before I decided to put it on the menu I ordered an alligator and gave it to my wife to try without telling her what it was. And she loved it! The texture looks like chicken but it doesn't peel apart like chicken." This weekend he'll be offering it as an alligator steak strip sandwich ($15.95), made Cajun style.
Voulkoudis was cagey when asked where he gets his antelope, but told us the beef in his burgers is from highly esteemed meat purveyor Pat LaFrieda. Asked what the antelope burgers taste like, he told us it's "between beef and deer; not that big of a difference in taste of meats. With the bison, it's a lot like beef but you can tell it's leaner. The ostrich is red meat so it tastes just like a burger, but there's something different." And if you want something different but don't want to trek to Williamsburg, you can find an ostrich burger at Big Nick's Burger & Pizza Joint on the Upper West Side. Elk, bison, ostrich burgers at also on the menu Bare Burger, among others.
