Curtis Granderson, right, Chris Dickerson, center, and Brett Gardner jump with joy after the win (AP) Yankees 4 Chicago 3: A brutal collision at home proved to be a crucial element of the Yankees victory. After the Yankees took a 3-2 lead in the 6th on Curtis Granderson's sac-fly RBI, the Yankees' defense almost gave away the lead before standing tall. AJ Burnett hit a batter and then Eduardo Nunez and Robinson Cano made errors to load the bases with one out. Geovany Soto lined a pitch that Brett Gardner caught and Gardner's throw home beat Carlos Pena to the plate. Pena tried to obliterated Russell Martin, but Martin managed to hang onto the ball, showing it to both Pena and the umpire. The Yankees held on for the rest of the game with Mariano Rivera earning his 17th save.
Mets 6 Anaheim 1: The Mets got back to winning with a home run from Carlos Beltran and a dominant start from Mike Pelfrey. Pelfrey allowed only five hits and didn't walk a batter while striking out five as he went the distance to earn his fourth win of the year. Jose Reyes went 1-for-3, scored two runs and stole two bases.
