The State Senate vote on marriage equality may not be happening today or tomorrow, but Gov. Andrew Cuomo is convinced that it will pass before the end of the legislative session next week. Cuomo expressed as much to reporters yesterday, while also assuaging critics fears: “I am also a proponent of religious freedom, and separation of church and state, so these are both very important principles. I don’t see one in competition with the other.” And after she was invoked negatively by opponents during the gay marriage assembly vote, Lady Gaga made sure that her monsters knew how important the issues is to her.
Gaga has been an outspoken proponent of marriage equality, Tweeting about the effort and encouraging her monsters to chip in various ways. One such way: calling Buffalo Republican Sen Mark Grisanti to ask him to vote yes on the initiative. But it seems Gaga called Manhattan Sen. Tom Duane, using her given name, to encourage him to vote yes...not realizing that Duane is a long-time sponsor of the gay marriage bill, as well as the lone openly-gay member of the Senate. Unfortunately, his staff didn't recognize who Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta was: “I don’t even know if I would have called her back, but it would have been nice to have her number.”
And today, she's already had three Tweets about the effort, starting a "TwitterTalk" with her followers on how legalization of gay marriage might effect NY. Then she explained how she feels: "I feel the denial of gay marriage sends a prejudice message. Our youth deserve a fair+hopeful future with government that values us equally." And then she encouraged her followers to trend #PawsUpForMarriageEquality.
While Gaga is focusing on the gay marriage fight and her promoting her new video "Edge of Glory," we're happy to report that her almost-feud with Weird Al has been totally put to bed. Below, you can get a sneak peak at the video for his new single, "Perform This Way."
