Sources tell the NY Times Anthony Weiner has told his friends he is stepping down. The news comes after Anthony Weiner's wife came back to the States and Democrats in Congress were poised to try persuade her sexty husband to step down. The Democrats were threatening to strip Weiner of his assignments on the Energy and Commerce committee, while some of Weiner's fellow Representatives were beginning to stand up for their toned congressional colleague. Weiner is expected to announce his resignation at a press conference at 2 p.m. today.
The closed door meeting which was scheduled for today at noon was thought to be part of a larger plan to persuade Weiner to pack it in. "One method to perhaps convince Weiner to resign was to conduct meetings designed to look as they were pressuring him to go, such as taking away his committee assignment or booting him out of the House Democratic Caucus," a source told Fox.
Politico reports that some of Weiner's friends were starting to make noise behind closed doors about the way the Dems have handled this three-week-long distraction. Apparently New Jersey Rep. Bill Pascrell had an emotional exchange with Nancy Pelosi and Pennsylvania Rep. Allyson Schwartz yesterday about it. “He was upset that some of the members of our caucus, prior to the leadership acting, had acted in their own right,” a senior Democratic aide who attended the meeting told the website.
NBC News has reported that Weiner’s staff left his Washington office early Thursday, shutting off the lights and locking the door.
