BREAKING: Weiner Says He Will Resign

Sources tell the NY Times Anthony Weiner has told his friends he is stepping down. The news comes after Anthony Weiner's wife came back to the States and Democrats in Congress were poised to try persuade her sexty husband to step down. The Democrats were threatening to strip Weiner of his assignments on the Energy and Commerce committee, while some of Weiner's fellow Representatives were beginning to stand up for their toned congressional colleague. Weiner is expected to announce his resignation at a press conference at 2 p.m. today.

The closed door meeting which was scheduled for today at noon was thought to be part of a larger plan to persuade Weiner to pack it in. "One method to perhaps convince Weiner to resign was to conduct meetings designed to look as they were pressuring him to go, such as taking away his committee assignment or booting him out of the House Democratic Caucus," a source told Fox.

Politico reports that some of Weiner's friends were starting to make noise behind closed doors about the way the Dems have handled this three-week-long distraction. Apparently New Jersey Rep. Bill Pascrell had an emotional exchange with Nancy Pelosi and Pennsylvania Rep. Allyson Schwartz yesterday about it. “He was upset that some of the members of our caucus, prior to the leadership acting, had acted in their own right,” a senior Democratic aide who attended the meeting told the website.

NBC News has reported that Weiner’s staff left his Washington office early Thursday, shutting off the lights and locking the door.

Weiner, who is somebody I deeply admire and who has never to my knowledge sexted me handled this whole thing very badly by not being honest and up-front in the beginning..hubris is the devil. It made him an easy target for the media circus. He did it to himself.

  • diablofreak

this guy didnt need to resign. idiot selfish democrats forced him out.
i dont see republicans doing this to one of their own.

this is why democrats are spineless and ineffectual. this is one of the good guys too (in terms of his work, not his personal life)

the media circus makes me sick.

  • unretrofiedforu

He was anything but a 'good guy' for the democratic party. His policies/stances/quotes are markedly anti-corporate. This was a great way to get rid of a liability when it comes to campaign contributions.

Just follow the dollar guys - it isn't like he was the first politician to do something like this - let alone the fact that he didn't even get laid.

  • Politburo

Perhaps one reason that Democrats are ineffectual because their leaders can't keep their dick in their pants. I mean, really now, Clinton, Spitzer, McGreevey, Weiner.. grow the fuck up.

And no, I don't give a shit that the GOP does it too.

  • diablofreak

honestly, the 4 you just named, with the exception of McGreevey bringing his boytoy to his cabinet, were pretty effective in what they do in their actual jobs.

  • S.D.

Yep, As if the Democratic party will get their s__t together and actually accomplish anything without this 'distraction'...

  • Guest

    so... who's replacing him?

Weiner is out -- Dick goes in.  i hope not.

  • felixthecat

    American media sucks big time.

  • ONE_LESS_FIXED_GEAR

    Comes with the territory.

  • Roger_the_Shrubber

He should have mooned them all right after he made his announcement.

  • S.D.

So, does he go to FOX, MSNBC or ABC as a 'commentator'???

  • jambolino

    Spitzer/Weiner   ... yes! ftw

  • Guest

So he's resigning because he has a penis and used technology for sexting. Yes he lied but isn't that his job as a politician??

Blake Lively and those other Hollywood hacks have done the same thing yet no one is crying foul on them.

but whatever. God Bless America I guess...

  • ONE_LESS_FIXED_GEAR

Yeah you are correct.  HUGE correlation there.  Hollywood hacks, and US Congressmen whose pregnant wives work for the Secretary of State, whose ex-president husbands officiated at her wedding to this J/O.  Jus' sayin'.  I mean, please. Not exactly the same thing.....

  • Guest

it's still sexting. I'm just annoyed with the way everyone is up in arms with this shit, esp the media....

  • JoanAngelson

He deserves it now. I called him and he acted like he didn't even know me after 10 years as his  girlfriend. He's such a prick.

  • nice job

    Send in the clowns!

  • Guest

    psycho hose beast alert!

  • jambolino

why take the heat for 3 weeks... then resign?

hope someone promised him a cushy gig cause he took it on the chin for the last month (no pun intended)

  • JoanAngelson

He'll be moving in with his mother, he has no prospects for jobs, he's never had one.
