Fail plate (via). Just a little more than a week ago—after "certitude" but before the press conference—it was starting to look like Weinergate was winding down (that was then). So we turned to other Weiner-related things to distract us like the fact that his Nissan Pathfinder appeared to be unregistered. We laughed for a bit and then Weiner's rep's explained the whole thing away. Except now it appears Weiner's camp wasn't really truthful.
At the time a rep for the Representative said his vehicle was "properly registered but the updated sticker was not displayed because the vehicle is not kept in New York." But now the New York State DMV has weighed in to the News and tells them that Weiner has a bigger issue. The plate on Weiner's SUV—US Congress 9—expired in 2006, and was actually registered to another of Weiner's cars. The plates assigned to the Pathfinder didn't have "US Congress" on them, see.
So maybe the talking point on Weiner today, instead of the ethics of those swank congressional gym shots, should be the importance of keeping your car registration up-to-date. You never know when a tabloid might be looking to play gotcha!
