Videology staffer Adam Sypnier and his pick

Welcome to our newish weekly column, "Staff Picks," in which we ask the staffers at our favorite book, music, and movie stores around to town to share with us what they're reading, listening to, and watching this week. We figure they're good people to ask. Last week we talked to Mr. Lou at Academy Records, and this week it's over to Williamsburg movie rental emporium Videology, where clerk Adam Sypnier tells us what he's been watching lately.

I Saw The Devil

Adam says: "South Korea is really making a name for itself with some seriously incredible films, especially in the crime thriller category. In Jee-woon Kim's second major film, we get over two hours of beautiful and brutal violent crime in a story of bloody revenge. While at first it may seem like it's going to be a typical chase after a killer and then the great dénouement where the hero has to make some sort of life choice, it quickly diverges from that once the antagonist is caught pretty much right off the bat. From there, it's just watching a ridiculously intense downward spiral and figuring out the hero's plan in all of this. I Saw the Devil is definitely not for the faint of heart, but if you want to get that blood pumping and see a thriller done gorgeously, this is the way to go. After you're done with that, I highly recommend you check out some more of South Korean's specialties, like Oldboy and Memories of Murder."

I Saw The Devil is available for rental at Videology for $3.50.

Congratulations.  You stole money from an artist and made it harder for them to make more films.

    Why do DVDs still exist?

Essentially every movie at every DVD place is scratched unless it has never been watched.

    It's a dated medium.

Videology is great because they actually have good movies available instantly. Netflix only streams garbage, and I don't see that changing--simply because people have no taste. So that's why DVDs still exist.
Yeah torrents, I don't know about you but I don't plan my life around watching shit. If I want a movie then waiting for it to download ain't gonna work. Torrents are passe, anyway. It is all about direct downloads these days. But that'll cost you as well, so I just go to Videology.

I'd disagree with your Netflix only streams garbage comment - every Criterion movie is watch instantly - and even besides that the netfilx catalog is about on par with walking into a blockbuster video.10 years ago

Though i was just stating the frustration with rental DVDs - they are all scratched in some way.

Death will come - and I feel it should be sooner than later.

Also most downloads for a single film take about 30 min tops these days - the time it would have taken you to walk(or drive) to the store.  Minus the scratches of course.  Though obviously torrent is not for everyone.

Plex is an interesting computer program that creates a great interface for everything doing the work for you to find content.
