Cop: Brooklyn Drug Smuggler Smelled Too Fresh

When driving with drugs, don't overdo it with the air fresheners! That seems to be the moral of the story of ex-Sanitation worker John Mignano, who was caught allegedly transporting 8.8 pounds of cocaine, 50 pounds of marijuana, and nearly $21,000 in cash at a traffic stop in Kansas. Mignano would have gotten away with it too if it weren't for his penchent for air fresheners, the Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper who busted him recently recounted in Brooklyn federal court.

The trooper testified that he became suspicious of the routine 2009 speeding stop (Mignano was doing 78 in a 70 zone) when he noticed "numerous" pine-tree air fresheners hanging on the turn-signal lever. Apparently overdoing it with the deodorant is a common drug smuggling trick.

When the trooper noticed Mignano's mother-in-law stick a pipe down her blouse, he searched the GMC Yukon Denali and found the contraband. Mignano, his wife (who was also in the car) and his mother-in-law are all now facing charges in Brooklyn of distributing cocaine and marijuana.

Note to self: when transporting drugs obey the speed limit.

Going 78 in a 70 mile zone? Probably got pulled over because
A: Kansas Highway Patrol is hurting for cash as much as every other dept.
    B: Out of state plates
C: Big expensive car, he can afford the ticket.
    and
D: All of the Above + While you might have been driving through Kansas, everything in the USA is part of the Police State
  • 78 in a 70? Why would you pull someone over for that.

Mignano probably thought the same thing. LOL

I dunno. Maybe the hwy patrol officer saw out-of-state plates on a speeding car and decided to pull over the driver just for the hell of it. (Some locales take their traffic laws very seriously--especially when the driver seems to be out of state. lol) Probably no one in NYC would have given Mignano a second glance; but in some place like rural Kansas, Mignano might just as well have painted pink polka dots all over his vehicle.

haha so it was the air-freshener not the pipe...

But Mignano was initially stopped because he was doing 78mph in a 70mph zone.  (Yeah, really.)

NYPost: "Mignano is not in Kansas anymore--he is awaiting trial in Brooklyn..."   LOL
  • You sometimes just can't make this up. At least this cop was on his toes.
