Brooklyn Man Gunned Down Months After Receiving Masters

A Brooklyn man who had just received his masters degree was murdered in front of his childhood home in Bushwick early Sunday morning. 24-year-old Calvin Louis-Juste, who graduated from Cortland University last fall was "shot in the neck at close range around 1:45 a.m. as he walked from his family's Moffat Street house to meet up with friends," The Daily News reports.

"Everybody's in shock," Louis-Juste's father, Eric Marcus, told reporters; "It always happens to the people you don't believe it would happen to…he grew up on this block. He was straight." Though Louis-Juste was rushed to a hospital following the shooting, doctors pronounced him dead a few hours later. The News also reports that "before breaking down in tears," Louis-Juste's mother said "'They killed my baby at 24 years old like he was a street person."

I knew Calvin and this is so tragic. He was incredibly full of life and had dreams of becoming a stock broker. It makes me both sick and sad to see comments on articles of his death, defaming him or saying he deserved it for being out at that time of night, when they didn't even know him. For the record he was a vibrant, determined, hard-working person who made everyone around him smile and wanted to succeed in life. RIP Calvin. My prayers go out to his family.

Another miserable, senseless tragedy...welcome to summertime in the city. Best wishes to Calvin's family.
On a side note, It's a bit of a weird headline. Why is it so remarkable that he received his masters? A number of people get them, BAs alone aren't competitive anymore. Is it because he's black and from Bushwick?

My guess is knowing our reactionary public, the assumption would be made that as a young black male gunned down in bushwick, he must have had it coming. You would have had the usual comments of "thug life" and "savages" . But by providing an educational background, sympathy is obtained and as you can see from the above comments, no assumptions of that nature are made. Fucked up, no?

There's nothing more tragic than a bright future eclipsed by random violence. Not that I'm blaming the victim in this, but walking the streets of Bushwick at 1:45  AM is a pretty dicey decision, regardless of how comfortable you may feel in what you consider home turf.

  • How horribly tragic. I'm so sorry for Calvin.

The Mekons said it best:  America is a "paradise of violence."

  • ahhhh, America -- land of opportunity!
