Kim Kardashian's Engagement Ring Weighs As Much As A Newborn Kitten

Kardashian sporting some other ridiculous rings.

Yesterday, we reported that Kim Kardashian got engaged to New Jersey Nets player Kris Humphries with a ginormous 20.5-carat ring. Today the Daily News asks how much that jumbo hunk of bling weighs, with a Manhattan jeweler guesstimating that it clocks in at a whopping four ounces. What exactly does four ounces look like? Here's a sample of what else Kimmy could be dragging around on her finger for the same workout:

Or an adorable newborn baby kitten.

In contrast, the average New York woman's engagment ring is about a carat to a carat and a half, which looks pretty boring by comparison:

  • I'm happy Kim got engaged. A lot of people are just hating, I'm not really a fan myself but I am happy to hear that she is happy and has a big ring to go along.

  • The real deal with her ring. http://pocketspitfire.com/kim-...

  • Not that Kim Kardashian would care, because she's such a class act, but the fact that women are still accepting diamond engagement rings these days, of any size, just boggles my mind. I can't count the number of friends I have who are so-called feminists but as soon as they get engaged, they giddily pop that diamond on their finger, justifying it by saying "I made sure it's not a blood diamond." Blood diamond or not, all diamonds are mined by workers in awful conditions in countries where regulations for worker safety are lax to nonexistant and the billions of dollars in profits are going to the diamond companies.

And regardless of the compassion you should feel for your fellow humans, how can any self-respecting woman accept a piece of jewelry that at worst makes her chattel and at best makes her a prosititute. It disturbs me that this so-called tradition is carried on not just by attention-seekers like the Kardashians but also by people who should know better.

Engagements should be about the love shared by the couple, not about a woman being bought by a man or a corporation profiting off of human suffering. If you haven't read this article about the evils of diamond engagement rings, you should: http://www.slate.com/id/216787...

I never dreamed there could be someone who was this rich yet infinitely less important than Paris Hilton.

People can spend their money however they want to, but here's a couple of points about how stupidly wasteful this is:

    1. Diamonds are semi-precious stones (at best) with poor resale value. They are not rare and make for a bad investment from a monetary standpoint.

    2. Though it quickly became an established custom in the U.S., the idea of a diamond engagement ring as a prerequisite to propose was actually conceived relatively recently by an advertising agency. The public just drank it up like Coca-Cola.

I'm guessing you're not marrying any time soon

Damn, accidentally clicked the like button. Anyway, I'm guessing from your comment that you've already bought into the ad campaign's premise (money spent = quality of love).

The truth is that DIAMONDS ARE NOT RARE & HAVE NO INTRINSIC VALUE so the diamond cartels have convinced people to place enormous SENTIMENTAL value on them in order to profit.
I actually just got married last year and got an uneasy feeling beforehand while researching diamonds online. My uneasiness wasn't about the upcoming marriage but about this seemingly time-honored tradition, which as it turns out is complete marketing bullshit.I kind of wondered what the hell I was doing. My gf (now wife) doesn't ordinarily wear ostentatious jewelry worth thousands of dollars. (Should I buy her a Fabergé egg too?) I talked to her about it and decided to spend the money I'd have otherwise wasted on a semiprecious rock on our honeymoon trip instead.I posted the link to the article above for anybody else considering marriage and stressing out about paying for a worthless trinket on top of the other expenses. You don't absolutely HAVE to.And that two month's salary "guideline" is just De Beers reaching into your pocket.

Hey, a Hallmark card is not rare and has no instrinsic value either but it's still nice to get one (that's not To Whom It May Concern)
Do you take your Mom out on Mother's Day? Or do you just say it is a commercialized 'holiday' meant to sell flowers, etc?

See, that's kind of a reductive argument: if you don't give gifts of greeting cards/diamond jewelry then you must be an unsentimental cheap bastard or a communist.

All I'm saying is that I'm not going to allow advertising to dictate how I express my affections.

Here's a quote from the article about the diamond cartel's marketing strategy (you should read it, it's interesting):

[It was] crucial to inculcate the idea that diamonds were a gift of love: the larger and finer the diamond, the greater the expression of love. Similarly, young women had to be encouraged to view diamonds as an integral part of any romantic courtship.
